IN FIVE DAYS, I was supposed to start my master’s in Canada. Instead of preparing my suitcase, I am trying to help my family survive war and displacement in Gaza. It was a simple space, but it created something powerful: a place where learning could continue despite displacement and hardship. From there, we expanded and established Hasan School as a primary school, then through continued growth and the addition of large field tents, we are able to provide learning opportunities for around 750 children living inside our camps and for the surrounding neighborhood. What started as a small effort has become a lifeline for education in the midst of displacement. Two and a half years of genocide and destruction have severely disrupted access to education. Many schools have been damaged, displaced students have been forced out of classrooms, and childhood learning has been interrupted on an unprecedented scale.
