AP's Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation is the kind of work that executive editor Julie Pace says “highlights the unique strengths of AP’s global, multiformat newsroom.” But those strengths are being hacked away as management leaves U.S. staffers in the dark on impending layoffs. Tell AP you stand with the guild if you want more reporting like the one honored today with journalism’s most prestigious award.

1/3 Today, 40 Associated Press guild-covered employees across the U.S. who accepted buyouts left the newsroom for the final time. We’ve been told layoffs will be coming, with no clear timeline. In solidarity, our members in office, at home, and in the field wore their union red today.

UPDATE: @AP buyouts are being approved today across the US and will kick in Thursday for people who agreed to take them. Management further warns that "we will need to move forward with some involuntary reductions." Translation: layoffs. No details yet but much anxiety.

MLB is having a moment for the exact same reason that baseball scorebook makers are seeing sales double. In our hyper-connected digital age, people are yearning for a bit of the phone-free, slowed down past. An afternoon at the park offers exactly that sportico.com/leagues/baseba…

Crossing the Straits of Mackinac on a ferry boat in April is quite an adventure. At this point, after the ferry turned into the wind, our faces were frozen solid in this pose. 🥶

@AP a few weeks ago offered buyouts to select staff in US. Now come "some involuntarily reductions in order to meet our business transformation needs in the United States." In one word: Layoffs. No details yet.

@Spartifactsmsu @MSU_Wrestling I briefly worked in the IM building in the '80s where the grapplers practiced in an extremely hot room. Had to make weight. A Gradyism: If you don't mind, it don't matter.

Jim was the editor of @thesnews at @michiganstateu. I was anxious: I only had sports clips from a weekly. I didn't think I'd get hired for general news. "35 a week," he said. 35 bucks? "You want to work for the best college paper?" I would have worked for free. A true giant. RIP.
