Update: @NationalMallNPS has responded to my questions about these 12 new statues. "The twelve soldiers represent the collective sacrifice of those who served during the Revolutionary War, reflecting the broad range of individuals who contributed to the nation's founding."
Martin Austermuhle@maustermuhle

It looks like the newly renovated Freedom Plaza is getting even more new statues. The one on horseback was planned, but there are now a dozen more statues lining the northern and southern edges of the plaza.

Pope Leo just condemned the idea that "work dignifies man". We. Are. So. Back!

"In the end, American consumers paid $159 billion in temporary national sales taxes for which most will never be reimbursed a penny. And rather than those taxes being used by the federal government to, say, repave roads or build bridges, most of the money will instead provide corporate windfalls." publicnotice.co/p/trump-tariff…

Pope Leo XIV
Pope Leo XIV@Pontifex·
We must, then, avoid the “Babel syndrome,” namely the idolatry of profit that sacrifices the weak, a uniformity that neutralizes differences, and the pretense that a single language — even a digital one — can translate everything, including the mystery of the person, into data and performance. This is the risk of dehumanization: building a future that excludes God and reduces the other to a means.

The Pope's humanist manifesto does something really interesting; not only does he call for new regulations and guardrails, but he also calls out what he describes as the "anti-human vision" pervasive in the tech world. Human limitations, he argues, are not bugs in our code to be fixed or optimized. They're at the core of love, wonder, community, the shared vulnerability of being human. charlottealter.substack.com/p/the-pope-is-…

“In practice, however, technology is never neutral, because it takes on the characteristics of those who devise it, finance it, regulate it and use it.” THANK YOU POPE LEO FOR SAYING THIS. Time for the “technology is a tool with no inherent moral position” idea to die!

On Memorial Day, we pay tribute to the brave men and women in uniform who gave their lives for this country that we love. It is a debt we can never fully repay, but we must never stop trying. I’ll always be grateful to our fallen heroes and their families, whose sacrifice reminds us of what it means to live for something greater than ourselves.
