A number of people have QTed this already but there’s a class of people we have allowed to roam free that, while maybe not violent, present themselves in a way that is obviously detrimental to public order. I can’t predict their behavior. I don’t know what they’ll do. Odds are they will do nothing. Some get off on that kind of power: act a little crazy and make the tax cattle scared. Some are just nuts and can’t control it and don’t think in those terms. It’s not really even the actual numbers of assaults, though. It’s the constant, perceived threat of them. I don’t know if a guy is gonna pull out a machete and swing it at me. I know enough about human behavior that while the risk is probably low, it’s non-zero, and it’s definitely higher than someone who isn’t presenting himself in the same way. Enough that I have to stay vigilant and can’t just let my guard down around them. My wife will see people like this and tell me to call the cops. I don’t, because what are they going to do? Being insane isn’t illegal. Being vaguely, indirectly menacing isn’t a crime. This person would be better off locked up (and so would the neighborhood), but we’ve eliminated any pretense for locking them up. So we just have to endure it. Pretty much all of the people who act like this could be charged with felony-level theft, or drug charges. It’s not like they act like this but hold down a normal job and pay their rent. They usually steal everything they have, and usually also to feed a drug habit. With all the diversion programs in place, none of these types ever see jail if they get arrested. They get sentenced to treatment (if at all) and don’t show up. They’re back out there the next day doing it again. We have to wait until they commit some heinous act before we can actually deal with them, despite knowing they’re ticking time bombs, and that we in most cases have ample probable cause to arrest them for other crimes. So yeah, statistically NYC (and other big progressive cities) are “safe,” but if people are being honest they don’t really feel safe. But they don’t want to admit to themselves it’s an actual problem before it’s too late.

The problem of homeless in the United States is not an issue of down on their luck individuals who just need a hand Those people almost ALWAYS get back on their feet quickly. Most homelessness is by choice. Either from drug use and refusal to stop or because they genuinely want to be homeless. Ive met couples living in tents in LA that will tell you its preferable to a 9 to 5 and responsibilities. Liberals push lies around homelessness out of ignorance and corruption. There is money to be made lying about the problem.

I trained an LLM from scratch on pre-1900 text to see if it could come up with quantum mechanics and relativity. While the model is too small to do meaningful reasoning, it has glimpses of intuition. When given observations from past landmark experiments, the model can declare that “light is made up of definite quantities of energy” and even suggest that gravity and acceleration are locally equivalent. NEW: San Francisco police trap 85 bicyclists on an offramp who were seen taking over the road, swerving around cars, & riding the wrong direction. The bike gang tried turning around after they were blocked on the ramp by SFPD & CHP, but quickly realized they were trapped. All of the bikes were confiscated. This is amazing.
