Finished 12th/525 in the MTG Limited Super Qualifier. Bubbled out of Top 8 after 10 rounds. Here's the deck I built and the record: 8-2 record, bubbled out of top 8. RD 1: 2-0 OTD (Jeskai Allies (Prowess Sokka) RD 2: 2-1 OTP (Grixis Control (Rise Of Sozin) RD 3: 1-2 OTD (Bant (Aang, 2x Spirit) RD 4: 2-0 OTP (Temur Lessons) RD 5: 1-2 OTP (Grixis Control, (Ran & Shaw) RD 6: 2-0 OTD (Jund (Bumi, Red Haste Rare) RD 7: 2-0 OTD (Rakdos Aggro) RD 8: 2-1 OTP (Sultai Sacrifice (Long Feng) RD 9: 2-0 OTD (Jeskai Allies (Prowess Sokka) RD 10: 2-0 OTD (Esper Allies (Katara) I obviously had a very good pool, only lacking more quality removal. To prepare for this event, I played a ton of draft and sealed on MTGO & MTGA, going from unranked -> mythic top 500 in 3 days. Some thoughts on ATLA Limited in general ⬇️

@ThatMoKid Glad to hear you speak out about this! Great to see both sides. No player is entitled to having their opponent surrender and ultimately I think everyone has to accept that fact. Conceding to prevent elimination during draws is too common now and leads to bad experiences.

Because I've been asked about the unfortunate draw situation a lot! Tldr; no drama, no hurt feelings, we just go next!

It's important to remember sometimes that not everything is in your control. Unfortunately Magic's skill expression ceiling is lower than most TCG's due to variance. Nobody can magically win a bad beat. Do what you can, try hard, and move on to the next one.

If you ever feel unlucky, my rd. 1 opponent opened Aang, Gran Gran, Wan Shi Tong, Knowledge Seeker, Kuruk, and Water Tribe Rallier in their pool + top tier uncommons/commons. (And drawing excellently, 6 lands in 25 cards) Meanwhile my Sealed pool only had 4 rares total... Play Boosters at work everybody.

4-2 with Esper Artifacts in the Standard Challenge. Very bad breakers so won't be squeezing into Top 8. Rd. 1 2-0 vs Izzet Prowess Rd. 2 2-0 vs Sultai Reanimator Rd. 3 1-2 vs Mardu Reanimator Rd. 4 2-0 vs Izzet Lessons Rd. 5 2-1 Izzet Lessons (Won two mulligans to 5) Rd. 6 0-2 Dimir Midrange We did manage to grab a 4-2 record with 10/14 games being a mulligan to 5 or 6. Round 3 was very unlucky, drawing 9 lands in the first 10 draws. Otherwise felt very favored. Learned that the Dimir Midrange matchup gets much worse for us being 3-color (Lots of life pressure). I will start adding 3-4 copies of Intimidation Tactics.

@ivipivi2018 I think Consuls is the worst card in the deck by far and would be my first cut. Not a bad choice at all!

6th Trophy in Standard w/ Esper Artifacts ⚫⚪🔵 I think my brain might be broken but I just can't stay away from the artifacts. I think this deck has very few bad matchups and is surprisingly well positioned into all the newly emerging decks. I was on three Irencrags in the first part of my testing and maybe just due to variance, I ended up in way too many spots where I had multiples and my Labs weren't able to safely resolve to turn them into resources. On the esper list, soul stone is essentially another Irencrag so it at least allows us to play multiple despite legendary rule. I think UB on 3 is incredibly strong though and I can definitely see it warranting an increase if that's your primary play pattern. I would love to take a look at your list as well!

@itshellboyj Hey! Been following your results for a while and appreciate your decklists / thoughts on the deck! Ive been mainly playing jeskai artifacts (winning 2 rcqs during vivi and now lessons meta) Not sure why most dont play more irencrags (on3) but its been amazing for me t3 UBfront.

@jakeAls I’m located in the Norcal area, it seems there are some Pauper events around. The format looks super fun! Interesting that it’s so popular in EU

@itshellboyj There is an mtgo RCQ on Sunday, not many/any paper RCQ I know of. There are a TON of events in Europe and Italy. Many paper events in the US but less frequent per area. Where are you located?

Why Esper Artifacts over Jeskai/Azorious? - More interactive - Stronger sideboard/game 2 - Better into a Lessons/Landfall meta Jeskai Artifacts struggles heavily into three matchups: - Selesnya Landfall - Jeskai Control - Izzet Lessons I believe Esper Artifacts improves these matchups while only making us slightly worse against Mono Red. (Which is currently performing the worst) Here's why: Playing negate/spell pierce was too slow / required too much mana. (This was the issue in Lessons & Control matchups) Playing black mana gives us access to Duress which massively improves those two matchups. We can remove interaction to try and resolve a high-roll Battlefront on T3/4. Visage of Dread also gives us a way to hit Shiko's/Marang/Riddler to help buy time. Black also massively improves our Landfall matchup into a competitive position. Access to The End allows us to punish them incredibly hard by removing their primary engines. Drill allows us to bypass the lists with hexproof and gives us the ability to answer hexproof threats. It also prevents Kona combo from storming us. (Although in most cases they will try to find a way to bounce/remove this first) With enough interaction from Visage + instant speed removals, Landfall becomes much easier to manage. Often times, we can win this matchup if we can dodge Scrapshooter or buy a turn to setup Simulacrum. Given the biggest tax is the amount of shocklands and the lack of full copies of Consuls - I expected this to make our matchups into Izzet Looting and Mono red harder but they still have remained some of our best matchups due to all the interaction we have. @MillThat I have this conversation a lot with people who quit MTG. It seems most people think that the variance from lands is just a consequence of early TCG design. Land variance has certainly made TCG broadcasting less exciting in more than a few instances.

People legit get Mana Screwed once and continue onto other games with equally bad deckbuilding but at least they can't get "Mana Screwed"

Which of these cards feels best positioned in this current Standard metagame? Assuming you have a great manabase that will be able to play it on curve.

my tradition of going 0-2 drop every time i play a new deck in the challenge for the first time is unbeaten

@Brittowski_ It is pretty nice. Even with having 100s of rare and mythic wildcards, I burned through all of them testing lists in just this season which eventually pushed me towards MTGO. Most standard decks are about $5-10 a week which you can get back from a 50% wr in leagues.

@itshellboyj Yeah, I guess I should give mtgo a go, since it seems like you can rent cards without the need to grind nonstop for a single deck.

It's time to lay my sweet prince down to rest. I feel so good about this 75 and I think if anyone was considering Artifacts for an RCQ - give this a shot.

I have seen quite a bit of players doing this, not against it at all, I think it gives you good equity into gy decks (sultai and in a smaller way gw landfall/gb). In my tracking sheet, I was 8-0 against Sultai/4c Reanimator so I started trimming copies of RIP in general since I didn't find it significantly improved GW landfall or Shiko Jeksai very much.

@itshellboyj I have in my main list 2 rest in peace cuse against graveyards decks I rather have the edge on the first match before sideboards

@_MetaMage_ Can you generate Jeskai Artifacts matchup spread and performance in the last 5 challenges? A winrate matrix for the top 10 archetypes including GW Landfall would be ideal. This would be in standard.
