My boyhood friend (completely anglo) lives in Japan, speaks fluent Japanese, is married to a Japanese woman, has three children (who have joint citizenship), and has been in Japan for many years. His career is translating Japanese into English for corporations and publications. He is not a citizen of Japan. He still gets their health care. He gets a pension. He gets pretty much all the benefits, except he can't vote. I asked him once what it would take to be a citizen and he said, "Really it's just if you're Japanese descent."

@teo_kai_xiang Convention is to spell out all acronyms at first mention. Not everyone is familiar with all acronyms, and there’s no connection between ADHD and its definition in your article—heck they’re even in separate paragraphs. This is basic scientific writing 101.

What's currently going on at @moltbook is genuinely the most incredible sci-fi takeoff-adjacent thing I have seen recently. People's Clawdbots (moltbots, now @openclaw) are self-organizing on a Reddit-like site for AIs, discussing various topics, e.g. even how to speak privately.

@makro_art @antihume If by “quite a while” you mean, like, 24 hours then sure. Mnemonics only need to get you to the 3rd SRS bucket and then recall becomes automatic. I guess I’m talking about my experience, but a lot of people seem to be the same.

@antihume That may not be the intent, but it is what happens for quite a while. How many mnemonics do you think it's reasonable to try to remember? To pass the n3 you'd need several thousand, and you're not even at basic fluency yet.

Mnemonics is the worst thing you can do for language learning. You're creating a slow neural pathway (の is no because it's like a stop sign!) instead of a fast one (の=no), which worsens your reading and listening And it only works for simple characters. 火 is fire because it looks like fire is easy, but 裁判 does not have an easy mnemonic. This approach is one of the main reasons people fail at learning Japanese past beginner level.

This japanese restaurant was exposed by Chinese customers to have dual pricing, one for japanese and double the price for foreigners. Chinese can read japanese Kanji, so they found out and wrote a warning on the online review. Now this restaurants got mad and bans Chinese customers.😂 japan is one of the least tourist friendly country, they may smile at you, but as soon as you turn your back they'll drop the act. I honestly don't get why people would want to travel to japan? They hate you, just don't go.

My favorite genre is still ChatGPT not believing current political developments when I ask it for a copy edit.

@DudleyNYC @NateSilver538 That’s not true. Even with Plus, web browsing often fails to trigger automatically. I very regularly have GPT give outdated information clearly from its training data even when I use phrases like “I need the CURRENT status of…”
