These headlines have been rampant, particularly in a Scottish context, for the last three weeks.
But I am expected to believe that we live in a society capable of shielding disabled people from the dangers of assisted death. We are, sadly, far away from that being the truth.

I’m glad our parliament had a round debate about assisted suicide.
However, no matter how positive the intentions, I cannot support assisted suicide legislation.
An ableist society cannot create non-ableist solutions.
Let’s give people a right to live before the right to die

@JedSparklet I agree. So dangerously dismissive of the concerns of disability experts too. It was simply not possible, in the current climate, to legislate the harm out of this.
The fact so many of them felt comfortable to take the chance is worrying.

A huge relief. Wishing we were ready and being ready are different things.
Our society is increasingly unkind to our most vulnerable. No amount of red tape would have protected them in practice.
We are an entire cultural shift away from being ready for this.

Am opposed to assisted dying, while respecting the position of many of those arguing for it. A debate requiring empathy and nuance. But ultimately, whatever merit the principle may have, it cannot be abstracted from the existing conditions of society.

Doubtless Stuart Campbell will be dancing a jig, but she deserves a lot of credit for protecting the party's interests. For the SNP to have any chance of hitting the target of an overall majority, even Edinburgh Southern can't be neglected.
