for me what it comes down to is counteracting the accelerationist aesthetic that pervades our lives right now, as well as the fact that AI almost always works as a yes-man. we want our students and ourselves to *pause* before we accept these new terms and make conscious choices

the most horrifying part for me was that these students were legit asking what would you want to do if AI made it so you didn’t have to work? and my answer - spend time reading & discussing & writing abt books - was incomprehensible to them. ART IS WHAT ALL THIS LIVING IS FOR

I did not mention the jokes they make about business majors online as I was practicing being mature

this fall a student said, to my face, after learning I had a PhD in literature, “have you heard the jokes online about how an English major is a pyramid scheme bc the only thing u can do is teach?” She had previously described using AI to read. Girl you NEED me to teach

@P1cklezzz @404paigenotfnd I’m not an expert re comp lit but for english lit, the standard would be programs that are fully funded for at least several years w full tuition remission. the stipend might be low (which is why you join your union) but there should be one. I would recc emailing for more info!

@mlboyd23 @404paigenotfnd Not always though right? I’m looking in Comp Lit and from my little research not all the departments offer fully funded. Berkeley, for ex, doesn’t say it’s fully funded but they offer GSI positions, I imagine these would not cover all the costs?

once every three months i go on grad school reddit and say hi should i get an english literature phd :) and every person ever says It is the single worst decision i have ever made in my life there is nothing i have done or could do that is worse than my choice to get this degree
