Er wordt terecht gepleit dat onze afhankelijkheid van fossiele brandstoffen moet afgebouwd worden. Maar sommigen denken dat we met windmolens, zonnepanelen en batterijen geen olie meer nodig hebben. Dat is spijtig genoeg niet juist. Om die afhankelijkheid van de energietransitie van olie te begrijpen kan je de eenvoudige vraag stellen aan je AI-assistent (Grok, ChatGPT, Gemini, ...): "Welke bijproducten van olie zijn nodig om windmolens, zonnepanelen en batterijen te maken?" voor dit soort vragen denk ik dat AI iets minder hallucineert. Het resultaat dat ik kreeg (na wat doorvragen en vragen voor een tabel en conclusie) was het volgende: De energietransitie vervangt olie als brandstof, maar niet als grondstof Petrochemie verschuift naar: -structuurmaterialen (composieten) -functionele chemie (elektrolyten, polymeren) Dit impliceert: -blijvende afhankelijkheid van raffinage & chemische industrie -minder volumetrisch, maar hogere toegevoegde waarde per ton olie Ik kreeg onderstaande tabel qua volumes olie nodig voor windturbines, zonnepanelen en batterijen. De energietransitie maakt ons dus niet onafhankelijk, maar mogelijk minder afhankelijk van fossiele brandstoffen. Energietransitie is dus maar een deel van de oplossing voor de strategische uitdaging waar we voor staan, nl de energieafhankelijkheid uitbouwen. Dit vraagt een bredere spreiding van energiebronnen (kern, wind, zon, olie, gas, misschien zelfs kolen) alsook een bredere spreiding van waar deze energiebronnen vandaan komen. Als voorbeeld moeten we misschien naar China kijken (kan je ook eens vragen aan je AI assistent). China heeft kernenergie als stabiele basis, versnelt de elektrificatie om zijn afhankelijkheid van fossiele brandstoffen af te bouwen. Het diversifieert zijn importkanalen voor fossiele brandstoffen, maar paradoxaal genoeg gebruiken ze steenkool als strategische buffer voor in moeilijke tijden. China is immers de grootste steenkoolproducent ter wereld (50% wereldproductie). In Europa kijken we naar mijn mening nog teveel met een ideologische bril naar de afbouw van onze energieafhankelijkheid. Dit moeten we in de toekomst met een open geest doen, los van a priori of ideologische vooroordelen als we enigszins resultaat willen halen.

Ja, het is volgens @Mauritsvdr goedkoper om rechtstreeks huursubsidies te doen dan de inefficiente sociale huisvestingmaatschappijen in leven te houden anyway. Maar het probleem van gebrek aan aanbod zit bij de lawfare tegen vergunningen en doorgedraaide milieuwetgeving. Aarhus conventie laat toe om alle vergunningen aan te vechten op milieugrond terwijl EU habitat en birds directives belachelijk rigide eisen stellen “beyond reasonable scientific doubt” dat het milieu niet beschadigt wordt. Op grondwet niveau hebben we dan het standstill principe, een excessieve interpretatie van een grondwetsartikel. Ook op grondwet niveau hebben we de verankering van de lokale autonomie, waar gemeentes elk federaal en regionaal plan kunnen onderhithalen door goldplating van eisen. Enkel het Europees niveau kan dit nog oplossen

Europa muss sich bei seiner Verteidigung und Energieversorgung behaupten. Das geht nur mit einer wettbewerbsfähigen Wirtschaft. Hier müssen wir heute einen großen Schritt weiterkommen. Ich bin zuversichtlich, dass das gelingt.

The EU Inc's 28th regime has achieved much but there's no mechanism to build a body of practical corporate law through the judiciary. It will diverge over time. Can't they just embed EU delegated judges in the national courts. If not at the first level, maybe at the appeal level? Maybe the EU courts can be done through Enhanced cooperation so that maybe there is EU Inc and then a set of countries where legal interpretation is uniform. Imo, a 15 country EU inc that's completely uniform versus a 27 country EU Inc that's fragmented is better. The holdouts will converge when they feel left behind or have more sane governments.

The complaining mostly stems from a mismatch between what is within a democratic governments remit and what is outside. The Aarhus convention is an international convention, that is joined by member states AND the EU. It is subsequently codified at EU level and then in some member states it’s also reinforced by constitutional interpretation. Other like the EU habitat and birds directives are pure EU law. The codification of policy in various rights, EU laws and treaties that actively undermine entrepreneurial activity (in this case permitting, often destroyed through elaborate court procedures) However, no representation I can vote for would have the power to amend those laws. Only the EU commission, in agreement with the EU council would have the power to amend this but both are indirectly elected and luckily this commission somewhat cares about barriers to entrepreneurship. In Belgium it’s defacto impossible to amend the constitution because it’s a defacto confederation and there is no natural convergence of Overton windows that would make amendments possible. So as a citizen we’re pretty much only left to beg the commission to leave the Aarhus treaty, overrule our own constitutions to empower only the nations with environmental and planning policies, modify relevant EU directives to no longer require “beyond scientific doubt” that no birds or nature reserves may suffer harm and remove the standstill principle that removes a national governments ability to lower environmental protection. Entrepreneurs don’t set out to harm the environment but environmental groups very often go on irrational crusades against entrepreneurs. So yea, Europe is responsible for damaging competitiveness but it’s also the solution to fixing it.

My informal take on European competitiveness: EU rules matter, but countries like Denmark, Ireland, Sweden, and the Netherlands lead globally, while other EU MSs lag behind. National reforms matter the most. 🔗⬇️ andriuskubilius.lt/en/on-european…
