I ended up in the ER earlier this month with a ruptured ovarian cyst. Thanks to some Googling and context from a previous Prenuvo scan, I knew exactly what was going on before I got there.
I tried to find an urgent care that could do a pelvic ultrasound but none of them could. The pain was so unbelievably horrible I had no choice but to go to the ER.
Because I was pretty confident on the diagnosis they were able to get me in and out pretty fast (4 hrs for an ER visit is fast). They confirmed the cyst hemorrhage with a CT scan and an ultrasound. Did a little bit of blood work and had me on an IV.
Total cost of the visit = $14k
Insurance covered = $10k
What I owe = $3,868
Breakdown of visit is attached
Idk why a CT scan costs $6k and the minimal blood work $1,200. They didn't even do a hormone panel which could've actually given some insight into the ovarian cysts.
My philosophy on health insurance has always been: it's only there for ER-level emergencies. Forget regular checkups—they’re nearly impossible to schedule and rarely address urgent issues. Book them with doctors who can see you immediately and just pay out of pocket. So I’ve relied on doing my own research, regular blood work, and scans like Prenuvo if something feels off.
But NOW, I feel the need to go further with pre-ER triage. Even with insurance, an ultrasound before heading to the ER could’ve saved me time and money. If it came back inconclusive, then yeah an ER makes sense.
I’ve been dealing with a lot of fun postpartum health issues but I’ve been trying to dial in food, supplements, ditching caffeine, and now drinking a disgusting orange-garlic-ACV concoction to try to stop the cysts before turning to the default 'solution' of birth control.
So, I want to build a list of places offering out-of-pocket diagnostics like ultrasounds and CT Scans but I’m not sure they exist. Isn’t this fun????
MRI Scan - Prenuvo ($999-$2,499; can often book same or next day)
Blood Labs - Quest Health ($100-$800 depending on how comprehensive, can get done at a local Tom Thumb or have phlebotomist come to you)
X-ray - Urgent Cares
What are the equivalents for--
Ct Scans
CT Angio
All different types of Ultrasounds
EKG
etc etc
??
