Yesterday defenders of democracy, today's destroyers, What a shame. What an irony of history, that the acclaimed defenders of democracy and human rights who claimed to have fought for democracy during the era of General Sani Abacha now find themselves worse than the man they opposed. Today, General Sani Abacha, once presumed face of oppression, will be remembered as seemingly more democratic and more respectful of human rights than the so-called champions of activism from the NADECO days. Power indeed reveals character. A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO

🚨 FINAL WARNING: NIGERIA MUST NOT BE DRAGGED INTO CRISIS 🚨 AN OPEN LETTER TO INEC, PRESIDENT TINUBU, THE JUDICIARY & THE WORLD To: The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission Prof, joassh Amupitan SAN His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu The Nigerian Judiciary The International Community Nigeria is standing at a dangerous crossroads. We raise this alarm with urgency: any attempt to manipulate or interfere in the internal affairs of political parties especially the African Democratic Congress (ADC) could trigger serious unrest across the country. At the center of this issue is a clear and documented truth: The former chairman of ADC resigned through a signed letter, officially stepping down and paving the way for David Mark to assume leadership. This process is: ✔️ Legal ✔️ Documented ✔️ Legitimate There is no confusion except the one being created. INEC DO NOT TEST THE PATIENCE OF NIGERIANS Your responsibility is to remain neutral and uphold the law. Do not create a crisis where none exists. PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU THIS IS YOUR TEST Nigeria must not become a country where institutions are used against the will of the people. History will remember what you allow or stop. I am moving with politicians with corruption allegations so that I can change them positively if they are guilty — Peter Obi Peter Obi, 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), said he is willing to work with members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) despite corruption allegations against some of them. He explained that close engagement gives him a chance to change them positively if guilty. Speaking on Saturday on Magic FM in Aba, Abia State, Obi cited Jesus Christ, who associated with tax collectors and pr+stitutes, as a model for influencing change. He said, “When Jesus came here, his friends were tax collectors and pr+stitutes because it’s all part of what he was trying to change. It was all part of what he was trying to build as a person.” Obi further argued that many accused politicians are facing selective persecution. He cited Malami and El-Rufai, saying, “Everybody knows the contributions of Malami and El-Rufai to the present government. So why are they being persecuted? The law is very selectively applied because we know we could see people who have done worse. We know people who actually should not be part of us all moving around like stars, while this government is busy targeting those whom they think are political opponents.” He highlighted that El-Rufai was arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on charges of alleged fr@ud and money laundering on March 24, while Malami, his wife Bashir Asabe, and son Abdulaziz face a 16-count charge of alleged money laundering by the EFCC.

Gowon, if you had signed the Aburi Peace Accord that you and Ojukwu agreed on for regional autonomy, so that every region could govern themselves, all these senseless killings wouldn’t be happening today. But instead of peace, you chose the path of war in 1967, and 3 million Igbo people lost their lives, then everyone was forced into this one Nigeria. God has kept you alive so you can witness what’s happening today, the people you call brothers are the ones massacring your own people in Plateau State. The East remembers!

One APC governor rides a very luxurious customized BMW as his official car in a state where insecurity is a watchword, just like Emperor Nubus also rides a highly luxurious customized American Cadillac as his official car. They keep lying to their dumb supporters claiming they inherited a bad economy and their brainless supporters believe them. Here, the Dutch PM rode regularly on bicycle while in office and his citizens enjoyed constant electricity, good education, affordable cost of living etc. BATists, if you ask God for bread, He'll give you stones!

France convinced Bola Tinubu it has a ‘machinery’ that can help him enforce tax on poor Nigerians. Tinubu rushed and signed a deal with the Direction générale des Finances publiques (DGFiP) - which is the overhyped French Tax Authority. Okay o. It’s time to enforce it. Let us see the French magic with DGFiP. Tinubu, and other African leaders will learn by force that addressing Africa’s problems can only be achieved through homegrown solutions. And if you really think ‘homegrown,’ there was no point attempting to tax poor people that you have never empowered to begin with. Those in the old tax band were still struggling to pay, and your perfect idea was to widen the net to include the poorest of the society. No problem. Continue (in Patience Jonathan’s voice)

I did warn the government of Nigeria that it’s easy to announce tax for poor citizens, but the problem is how to enforce it. They will keep extending the date, no matter how much they pay your twitter financial experts to ‘educate’ you on the need to file returns. The whole idea of this new tax regime was to widen the net so those in the informal sector (e.g artisans, laborers, vulcanizers etc) can pay. And I asked how do you keep track of what is supposed to be their taxable income? No one gave a reasonable explanation. Even the ones earning digitally, there’s a concept of tax withholding if you earn in certain countries. Nigeria doesn’t have tax treaty for possible waivers. Double taxation will frustrate you. At the end of the day, you people and government will do WWE until they probably scrap this idea. Good luck everyone.

Tell me why, after removing the subsidy, your paymaster has taken the highest amount of loans any sitting president has ever taken in their first term in Nigeria’s history. And now, he has almost borrowed the same amount that Buhari took in 8 years—yet he’s doing it in just 3 years

Dear Mansur, Thank you for your feedback. The answer is because we cannot afford it. For the last fifteen years before the subsidy was removed in Nigeria, we were not paying for it with money we earned. We were paying for subsidies by taking loans, mostly foreign debts. That is why, even though President Obasanjo paid off our debts in 2003, they rose to $113 billion under General Buhari. Please fact-check me: It is partly because General Buhari spent $26 billion on fuel subsidies alone, and even more on subsidising the Naira. In Buhari's final year as President, Nigeria was spending close to 90% of its revenue on debt servicing. Not debt repayment. Debt servicing. And when debt goes up, and foreign reserves go down, people like you will come here to attack the government of the day for ruining the country. The issue is that, sadly, many of our people (not all, but a critical mass) are not very sentient. We tend to be governed by emotions and do not engage in critical thinking to understand the consequential relationship between cause and effect. With regards to Australia, that nation is not subsidising fuel. They simply reduced governmental tax on the commodity, which has already been done in Nigeria with the Naira For Crude deal with the Dangote Refinery, which is meant to benefit Nigerians. Without that deal in place, the Iran War would have led to even higher prices than we have today. Further on Australia, that nation has a 45% income tax. Will you be willing to pay 45% income tax if the Nigerian government agrees to bring back fuel subsidies, Mansur? Nigeria's economy will collapse if fuel subsidies return. Thanks again, Mansur, and may God bless you. Reno Omokri Ambassador Designate to Mexico. Gospeller. Before Tinubu came to power, he promised that Nigeria was wasting too much on fuel subsidies. He said he would remove the subsidy and redirect the money to better things like infrastructure and social welfare. The federal government now saves over 10 trillion naira yearly from the removal of the subsidy. When we asked where the money was going, they said it was being used for debt servicing. Yet today, Tinubu has taken more loans than any president in Nigeria in the last 20 years. If you still tell us to relax because Tinubu is working, it shall not be well with you. Above all, love God.

🇳🇬 Nigerians! My stance has not changed regarding the payment of poverty taxes! I have been stressing this point since last year, long before the criminal alterations and forgeries surrounding the tax laws became public knowledge. My singular question has always been: What have you benefited as a citizen of Nigeria from an oil-producing nation? They have removed the fuel subsidy. Now you must pay heavily to keep your businesses running, even though electricity supply is never guaranteed. In fact, it has gotten even worse. Our farmers can no longer return to their farms because of Fulani terrorists and Boko Haram networks. The Naira is one of the worst-performing currencies in the world, and businesses are closing down instead of growing. Your government would rather buy jets and yachts instead of equipping our hospitals properly. You can easily die from an ordinary snake bite because our public hospitals are ill-equipped. You have no freedom of movement because kidnapping now pays more than any other crime, and the government seems to care less about your safety. So what exactly are you paying these extra taxes for? From what money? The funny and dangerous thing is that they quietly altered the tax laws after the National Assembly had passed them, inserting more coercive modes of enforcement. It is as if they anticipated your lack of cooperation. They are now armed with aggressive powers to arrest, detain, seal businesses, seize goods, and confiscate property, all in an economy where people are barely staying afloat. My own position has always been clear. You simply cannot aggressively tax a population already deep in poverty and malnutrition. It is economically flawed and morally indefensible. If this stands as it is, what we are experiencing today will be the easy part. #RejectPovertyTax

BSN@Barristerstreet

I have been warning loudly about the tax issue long before the fraud behind it became public. Some of us run multiple online platforms where we engage daily with business owners and entrepreneurs. I can tell you, without exaggeration, how much poorer people have become because of widespread poverty in the country. To show the bad faith behind this tax law, powers were quietly inserted that effectively create a police-like tax enforcement unit, granting tax authorities coercive powers to arrest, detain, and prosecute citizens. Beyond that, they gave themselves excessive powers to seal, seize, and confiscate property for failure to pay taxes. I do not think Nigerians understand what we are up against until it begins to happen to them directly. I have remained consistent on this issue, and I will not pretend surprise when the consequences arrive. We must resist not just the implementation but even the suspension of this fraudulent tax law. If this law is allowed to stand, the poverty we see today, the insecurity we experience now, and the inflation crushing people will look mild compared to what is coming. You cannot tax poverty anywhere in the world. You do not do that. Many Nigerians are barely scratching the surface. Nigerians must wake up, resist this inhumane law, and demand accountability. Those who abused the constitution to grant themselves unchecked executive powers must be investigated and prosecuted.

Most of the time we wonder why people are mentally, financially and physically tired. But just because they are left with no option, they have to keep showing up every day. And what do they get in return? A government that is unaccountable and doesn't deem it fit to prioritize its citizens' welfare. Sometimes I wonder how these people sleep at night knowing how many lives they are destroying daily. It is under this same administration that we have constant power failure. This same administration where kidnapping and killing is the order of the day. People are barely able to survive every day, but you have the effrontery to campaign for another term. You commission audio projects and siphon the money. Feed off the people's resources and still have the audacity to ask us to pay more taxes. You are a typical example of failure and the earlier we realize that this whole APC government is a cancer, the better for us!
