Southern states or states with severe shortages make it easier, but many states require at least a year program in college to transition to teach. I'm a lawyer who needed to go back to be qualified to teach middle school level English or history.

We need to normalize PhDs teaching high school. That solves at least two problems: absorbs some of the elite overproduction and put subject-matter experts (rather than ed school grads) in hs classrooms. (I know there are other problems.)
