"Rather Me Here Than Them." A New Zealand Student Who Left Uni to Fight for Ukraine. 🇺🇦🇳🇿 He was studying mechanical engineering in Auckland. Then he saw the photos. Meet "Kiwi" — Private, 47th Separate Mechanised Brigade, Ukrainian Armed Forces. Age: university student. Military experience before arriving: zero. He is from New Zealand. He chose to be here. "I didn't like what Russia was doing — bombing civilians, bombing houses. I didn't agree with any of it. So I dropped university and came here." No prior service. No weapons training. He found the 47th through an online friend he'd met while trying to learn Ukrainian on a language app. Showed up. Got trained for a month straight. Shooting. Walking. Lots of walking. He has now completed 10 combat missions. What surprised him most about the front line wasn't the cold, or the mud — though both made moving almost impossible. It wasn't seeing friends wounded, or the moment you realise: that could have been me. It was the drones. "Always drones. You hear one and you think — oh shit, what do I do? And then the training kicks in. You stay still. Hide behind a tree. That's the best thing you can do." On one mission, approaching a position with a friend, they were told two Russian soldiers needed to be eliminated. Kiwi was on the machine gun. His friend was point man. His friend went down — shot, screaming "I'm wounded, I'm wounded" — while still firing. Kiwi ran five metres forward into a ditch and opened up. Then he ran out of ammunition. So he grabbed the empty ammo box — and threw it at the Russians. "And then they started shooting back. That was the funniest part of my day." He still thinks about his family in Auckland. Talks to them when he can. Misses them. "Rather me here than them." To anyone in Australia or New Zealand watching this war from a distance — wondering if it's real, wondering if it matters, wondering what one person can do: There is already a Kiwi in the trenches. He dropped his engineering degree, learned some Ukrainian on an app, flew halfway around the world, and is now fighting in one of the most contested brigades on the eastern front. Not because anyone asked him to. Because he saw the photos. And couldn't look away. "I love Ukraine. I love this country. Keep fighting." — Private "Kiwi", 47th Brigade, Ukrainian Armed Forces. #Ukraine #NewZealand #Australia #47thBrigade #StandWithUkraine #UkraineWillWin #SlavaUkraini #ForeignVolunteers #UAF #ANZACSpirit

UPDATE: Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar sent a text message today to his Ukrainian counterpart & wrote that unfortunately it is too late & the vessel has already left the port of Haifa and therefore it cannot be detained (the Israeli Foreign Ministry knew about this vessel two weeks before it arrived at the port).Senior Ukrainian officials tell me they made it clear to Israel that they are demanding the confiscation of the wheat cargo
Barak Ravid@BarakRavid

🚨🇺🇦🇮🇱 Ukraine today asked Israel for clarifications regarding the fact that a vessel allegedly belonging to Russia’s “shadow fleet” docked at the port of Haifa with a shipment of wheat originating from territories that Russia occupied from Ukraine during the war, according to a senior Ukrainian official and another source familiar with the details ❗️Why it matters: This incident could turn out to be a significant violation by Israel of U.S. and international sanctions imposed on Russia and its “shadow fleet” ❓If this is indeed the case, it is a serious incident that contradicts the declared policy of the Israeli government 🚢 Ukraine is demanding that Israel detain the Russian vessel, which Ukraine claims is under international sanctions, and prevent it from leaving the port 🕵️ Behind the scenes: A senior Ukrainian official told me that Ukrainian intelligence identified the preparations of the Russian vessel to depart from the Black Sea with a cargo of grain originating from territories that Russia captured from Ukraine 🇺🇦 Ukrainian intelligence prepared a file with information on the matter and transferred it to the Prosecutor General’s Office in Ukraine on March 20 🇺🇦🇮🇱 On March 27, Ukraine’s ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, met with senior officials at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, handed over the information, warned that this constitutes a violation of sanctions, and requested that the vessel not be allowed to dock in Israel 🛳️ A senior Ukrainian official told me that, based on the Prosecutor General’s request, a Ukrainian court issued on April 8 a detention order for the Russian vessel 🏗️ Today, after the Russian vessel docked at the port of Haifa, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General met with Israel’s ambassador to Kyiv, Michael Brodsky, and handed him a request for international legal assistance - and for the detention of the vessel

@POLITICOEurope The US becomes more and more irrelevant to the world. But how do they expect to maintain their defence industry if Europe will stop buying weapons from them? Who will continue buying their weapons? Middle East - no, EU - no, Japan, South Korea - no. Not after Iran affair.

In Italia l’ennesimo bambino ucraino morto non fa più notizia. Maksym aveva 11 anni. È morto ieri mentre dormiva nella sua cameretta. Aveva fatto i compiti. Oggi sarebbe dovuto andare a scuola. È gente senza spina dorsale, senza coscienza, senza cuore.

I arrived in Kyiv last night, just before Russia's latest massive drone and missile attack. Across the country 17 people were killed. I'm proud of the fact my newspaper, the @guardian, continues to cover Russia's bloody war against Ukraine theguardian.com/world/2026/apr…

Since you, Mr. Vance, don't understand the value of freedom, let's talk in a language you do understand: value of money. Are you equally proud that American defense companies have lost - and will lose - hundreds of billions of dollars in orders from Europe, Canada and other allies because your administration has completely destroyed their trust in America as a partner? That's not America First. That's America losing money. And friends.

The bilateral aid ($60B target) includes no blanket restrictions on where to buy. Much of it flows through PURL. The EU loan, however, applies strict European preference rules. Ukraine must prioritise purchases from EU/EEA/EFTA countries, Ukraine itself, or associated producers. Non-European suppliers are allowed as a fallback if European options aren’t available or timely enough.

Odesa today. According to latest reports 8 people died here in a massive russian attack. 16 others were injured. These deaths didn't bring russia any closer to conquering Ukraine. They didn't serve any military purpose whatsoever, its plain and simple terrorism.

Every day, I write the same story: Russian strikes claiming lives. One person here, five there, a child, a grandparent... These tragedies have become so routine that the world is growing numb. Even as I try to share what’s happening in Kharkiv, I have to fight the algorithms. I have to get creative with my phrasing because the app flags "explosions in Kharkiv" as spam because of how often i post this same thing. Don't let our reality become background noise or a "show" you've grown tired of. Please help us amplify the truth. Every life taken was important and irreplaceable. These are not just statistics; they are unspeakable crimes.

@BulwarkOnline If you want to protect the world against russia - why aren’t you doing anything right now? While russia is openly helping Iran to kill your soldiers and bomb the neighbours? Why are you lifting sanctions from russia so they can enrich even more and become even more dangerous??

This boy dreamed of a peaceful sky over Ukraine. But russia killed him. On April 14 in Cherkasy, 8-year-old Bohdan was playing at a playground with other children when russian Shahed drones struck nearby. russia continues to kill innocent children, leaving their parents in grief and stealing their future.

Vance says that stopping funding for Ukraine is one of his proudest achievements in this administration. I’m watching this stunningly cruel speech from Ukraine, as Russia continues to kills us every day. Just today, they killed 8-year-old boy in Cherkasy and five people in Dnipro. Dozens more were injured. The military assistance you are so proud of stopping was used to save lives in a war Russia started and continues every day by choice, in a war that only became possible after USA pressured Ukraine into disarming... I do not know if Vance can fully comprehend the scale of the tragedy unfolding here: a brutal, illegal war of extermination by Russia, and the slow abandonment by our allies. There is nothing to be proud of. Absolutely nothing.

Iceland and Poland have confirmed their willingness to join the agreement required to launch the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression Against Ukraine. We are grateful to our Icelandic and Polish partners for taking this important step. It marks a turning point: with 17 confirmations we have officially crossed the bare legal minimum of @coe member states required to put the agreement to vote. The Enlarged Partial Agreement (EPA) on the Management Committee of the Special Tribunal can now be tabled and adopted during the Ministerial meeting of the CoE Committee of Ministers in Chisinau on May 14-15. Less than a year have passed since we gave the green light to the Tribunal on May 9th, 2025, when we gathered European foreign ministers in Lviv. And now we have prepared all legal steps to put the Tribunal into action. We will continue to gather more signatures of countries to join — both within the Council of Europe and outside of it, on all continents and in all regions. We encourage all states to join this historic accountability effort. Criminals in Moscow must realize that justice is inevitable. From ordinary Russian executors to the highest military and political leadership. Accountability is critical for a lasting peace.
