Sometimes, the best science happens on accident. A team using Hubble studied a comet (not even their first-choice target!) and realized they were witnessing it in the act of breaking apart. Find out more about these ultra-rare observations: go.nasa.gov/4lUAdIl

Wow, what an amazing accidental discovery! Hubble caught C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) breaking into at least four pieces right after perihelion, revealing its fragile nature and unusually low carbon content. That carbon-depleted makeup gives us a rare peek into the pristine icy materials from the early Solar System. These surprise moments are pure gold for science!

@NASAHubble Is it normal for comets to break apart by themselves, or did something hit it?

Falling Asleep with the Universe
@NASAHubble This is exactly why we look up! 🌌 It’s humbling to think that even when we aren't looking for something specific, the universe finds a way to show us its most violent and beautiful secrets. Hubble still proving it's the GOAT.
