Messier 58 … in a different light! Our retired Spitzer telescope revealed the galaxy’s stellar populations. In the representational colors chosen for this infrared view, reddish areas are the likely birthplaces of new stars, while blue light comes from mature stars.

Discovered in 1779 by astronomer Charles Messier, the galaxy Messier 58 was one of the first galaxies recognized to have a spiral shape. It’s also the most distant of the objects included in Messier’s stargazing catalog, at 62 million light-years away: go.nasa.gov/4cXSAJN

At 5,500 light-years away, Messier 4 is the closest globular cluster to Earth. Globular clusters are spherical groups of stars, held together by gravity. This image spans the wide range of wavelengths that Hubble’s instruments are sensitive to: go.nasa.gov/4uChHZ2

Messier 32 is a friend of a friend. This galaxy orbits the Andromeda Galaxy, our Milky Way's closest major galactic neighbor. M32 is one of two satellite galaxies orbiting Andromeda: go.nasa.gov/4b8JQiL

First up: Messier 10! M10 is a globular cluster, which is a roughly spherical grouping of stars held together by their mutual gravity. This cluster is about 15,000 light-years away, and can be found in the constellation Ophiuchus. go.nasa.gov/418BVff

This glittering cluster of stars orbits our galaxy's core like a satellite. M92 is a globular cluster – a roughly spherical group of stars held together by their own gravity. Our Milky Way is home to many such clusters, and M92 is one of its brightest: go.nasa.gov/46OR60B

Upgrade complete! On March 9, 2002, the Hubble Space Telescope was redeployed after its fourth servicing mission. A new instrument, the powerful Advanced Camera for Surveys, was installed on the telescope, as well as a new power control unit, and new solar arrays. In this photo taken that day, @NASAHubble is seen through one of space shuttle Columbia's overhead windows as the orbiter's robotic arm lifts it from the cargo bay, prior to its release.

So that’s what a swan’s egg looks like… 🤔 This @NASAHubble image reveals the central star “yolk” and dense dust cloud of the Egg Nebula, located about 1,000 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus (the Swan).
