I’m making a thread on the various cultures throughout the US since there seems to be a lot of xenophobia and dismissal of bipoc groups in the US. Non Americans see us all as one white country with the same way of life or something and it’s annoying so … here we are (🧵):
So, I spoke to people getting food at a food bank and here are some things I learned from those in need:
1. Everyone donates Kraft Mac and Cheese in the box. They can rarely use it because it needs milk and butter which is hard to get from regular food banks.
2. Boxed milk is a treasure, as kids need it for cereal which they also get a lot of.
3. Everyone donates pasta sauce and spaghetti noodles.
4. They cannot eat all the awesome canned veggies and soup unless you put a can opener in too or buy pop tops.
5. Oil is a luxury but needed for Rice a-Roni which they also get a lot of.
6. Spices or salt and pepper would be a real Christmas gift.
7. Tea bags and coffee make them feel like you care.
8. Sugar and flour are treats.
9. They fawn over fresh produce donated by farmers and grocery stores.
10. Seeds are cool in Spring and Summer because growing can be easy for some.
11. They rarely get fresh meat.
12. Tuna and crackers make a good lunch.
13. Hamburger Helper goes nowhere without ground beef.
14. They get lots of peanut butter and jelly but usually not sandwich bread.
15. Butter or margarine is nice too.
16. Eggs are a real commodity.
17. Cake mix and frosting makes it possible to make a child’s birthday cake.
18. Dishwashing detergent is very expensive and is always appreciated.
19. Feminine hygiene products are a luxury and women will cry over that.
20. Everyone loves Stove Top Stuffing.
In all the years I have donated food at the Holidays, I bought what I thought they wanted, but have never asked. I am glad I did. If you are helping a Family this Christmas, maybe this can help you tailor it more. It does for me!
I think sometimes we forget (or never knew) the overlapping traits between Autism, ADHD, and Giftedness. Some of our students even have two of these exceptionalities and are referred to as Twice Exceptional (or 2E). Both of my sons are 2E. Please take a minute to read about it and study this Venn Diagram for a visual representation. They have more in common than you might think!

ENYESE shared the love for Assistant Principal’s week. All the love and appreciation I received from staff and students filled my heart with joy! The heart balloon is filled with all of my students’ thumbprints- a sweet memory 😍 “The work” isn’t easy, but truly rewarding 🥰
There is a monster leak of Arctic air heading towards the whole of North America. Many places will experience -20C. These leaks are becoming more frequent as the jet stream weakens. This is a new climate. The stability of the Holocene is over.
@mrhooker New teachers also need support to build their capacity. Your child’s teacher might be doing things the way she experienced it or following the advice of her mentor teachers. It’s worth a discussion with her. 😊
@mrhooker This can also become amotivational for the students. After an 11-point deduction, then 50% deduction, an unintended conseq. might be that the children just do not do the work or engage with the content. It can become a “slippery slope,” especially if the content is challenging.
We just got a behavior policy from my daughter‘s teacher. They are taking points off for late work. At first it’s 11 points for 1 day, then 50% for 3 days late. What is this teaching our kids? What kind of alternatives should I suggest to the teacher?
@lbpopupbooks@StephenAtHome If you hold the “e” when you type it, don’t you get all accent options, like the accent grave you were looking for? (scène). On a PC there are alt codes: ALT + 0200 = è
