The Tokaido Shinkansen will introduce a new fully private room on some N700S trainsets in fiscal 2026, with two rooms per train. These will sit above Green Car class and are designed as premium personal spaces for both work and relaxation. The rooms will include reclining seats with leg rests, adjustable lighting, adjustable air conditioning airflow, personal control over onboard announcement volume, the world’s first transparent glass antenna technology compatible with 5G on a railway vehicle for a dedicated onboard Wi-Fi environment, and NTT’s PSZ sound technology, which is designed to keep audio such as music or video sound concentrated around the passenger, helping reduce sound leakage to others nearby. Then in fiscal 2027, six semi-private room style seats are planned for Car 10 of the N700S. These will also be positioned above Green Car class and will feature lockable doors, large shell-style seats, and leg rests. Unlike the fully private room, they are designed to feel less enclosed and can also be rotated for face-to-face seating.

The Japanese #Kiha40 diesel railcar was moved to Hua Lamphong ahead of the 129th Anniversary of the founding of the State Railway of Thailand on Thursday. They are expected to go into service from 20 April onwards. Stay tuned for more updates. #Thailand #KiHa48 #キハ40 #キハ48

🇲🇾 It has already been more than two years since @PR_SRT built the “Beyond Horizon” luxury coach, but it has never entered service. Now it looks like @ktm_berhad may beat them to it with their own luxury coach. It is called the “Airconditioned eXecutive Coach”, or AXC for short. I was invited to the train depot in Kuala Lumpur for an exclusive tour of this and other luxury coaches belonging to the KTM Charter Train division. Think SRT Prestige, but more modern and luxurious. The AXC has fourteen airline-style pods in each carriage, arranged in a spacious 1+1 layout. Each pod is a wide reclining leather seat with an extendable leg rest that can turn it into a near-flat lounge position. All seats can face the direction of travel or swivel around to face a friend or partner, making it ideal for couples or small groups. Each pod has its own control panel for adjusting the seat position, plus a solid armrest table and individual lighting. Large picture windows, generous legroom, soft carpeting, and warm ambient floor lighting give the carriage a very premium feel. There is also ample luggage space along the side racks and at one end. I cannot wait to try the AXC on a rail trip in Malaysia. Maybe one day it will run from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok. After all, Thailand is expected to open its rail network to private operators. That would be exciting. Sri Lanka *RAIL TRAVEL WARNING* Unfortunately at the moment there are some serious issues affecting tourists using the railways in Sri Lanka - please stay extra vigilant. Extract from a recent report of a rail fan visiting: "Pay attention to the apparent increase in crime targetted at tourists on trains and stations in the Colombo area. I've never experienced or witnessed anything like this in ten years of travelling to the country - hopefully it's a temporary situation." "In Colombo i witnessed 8 attacks on tourists at Fort station despite Police being present on Platform 5- i have now been many times to Sri Lanka and usually witness several attempted or theft of bags on trains and wallets- phones on stations in Colombo area. By day 4 i had seen many attacks by groups on tourists taking anything they can get. This time thinks are different, many more tourists and its groups basically knocking people over or down to the ground, with some force- and i saw many with head injuries or people just couldn't get up. I was attacked but not injured on local commuter train heading for Panadura had my bag snatched which they jumped off the train whilst moving / leaving Ratmalana- it was to fast for me to jump off into the usual crap on the trackside. Days later when i return home i was informed of another assault on the same train minutes before mine- the person was left face down on the floor i understand and was found at Panadura. Last week i understand a train enthusiast was surrounded and knocked over hard to the ground- robbed of his bag, camera etc whilst trying to take photos- i beleive this was between Panadura and Aluthgama. Anyone visiting please be careful as i noticed some of these people have like home made sharp stanley knife blades and cutting bags etc" I do hope this situation is taken seriously and clamped down on.
