A 1500 plus crowd at the annual Calcutta club debate on ‘ Justice is often demanded but seldom delivered..’ Where else but in Calcutta will you get such an enthusiastic crowd for a debate? Contrast that with Mumbai where an elite club recently cancelled a talk because they thought the subject was too ‘political’! Long live Kolkata’s tradition to debate, and yes, to listen! I remember him telling me when we met at the @UN in NY about how after becoming PM he returned Diwali gifts to their senders. I asked why, He said they were too expensive, some concealed very generous gifts within, and as a diabetic he didn't eat sweets anyway. I gently admonished him, saying exchanging gifts at Diwali, especially sweets, was a tradition and returning them would seem discourteous, if not churlish. He listened, but said nothing. When he came back to the @UN the following year he smiled at me and said, "Shashi I took your advice." I wondered what it was I had been presumptuous enough to advise my Prime Minister on. "What you said about Diwali tradition," he reminded me. "I do return the expensive gifts, but i no longer send the sweets back." His smile became broader. "I distribute them to my staff instead!"

My friend @Ramu_Damodaran, once PS to PM Narasimha Rao, tells this story about #DrManmohanSingh that highlights an aspect of him we don't talk about enough: his honesty. "My first meeting with Dr MMS was in July ‘91, the day I joined Prime Minister Narasimha Rao’s office. The devaluations of the rupee had taken place a few days earlier. He came to the PM’s Race Course Road office and walked straight into his room from the car. On the way out he detoured to come to my room. He had a small envelope in his hand which he gave me saying “please make sure this is credited to PM’s Relief Fund.” I opened the envelope after he left to find a cheque for a huge amount I cannot now precisely remember . With it a note saying “Representing the difference in rupee value of my assets abroad consequent upon devaluation.”

Sadly Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away. I knew him, first as an academic, then as my friend in need-when he as Chairman of the Committee for IIT / D, he overruled Mrs Gandhi & made me Professor, later as Adviser when I became Cabinet Minister in 1990-91, and then he as FM, and finally as PM, we remained throughout as trusted friends,

An extremely full and extraordinarily distinguished life has ended. Chief Economic Adviser, Finance Secretary, Governor RBI, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, Finance Minister, and Prime Minister of India. An alumnus of both Oxford and Cambridge. Winner of the prestigious Adam Smith Prize at Cambridge in 1956. Soft-spoken, sober, and always dignified, he had a steely resolve. He was the technocratic transformer of the Indian economy through his 1991, 1992, and other budgets. His Prime Ministership saw revolutionary legislation relating to rural employment, tribal rights, reservations for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and OBCs, primary education, food security, and land acquisition. The Indo-US nuclear agreement was a landmark that enhanced India's global status. His Prime Ministership saw the highest GDP growth rate in the country’s history. He was a gentleman to the core, and one who bore no ill-will or malice to anyone. He believed in and practised the politics of dialogue, consensus, and accommodation even under difficult circumstances. Humility and integrity defined him. Those who sought to besmirch him revealed their own true colours. Many of the initiatives he took as PM were marketed, branded, and projected as his successor's contributions. But Dr. Singh never minded and would give his trademark smile. He recruited me to the Planning Commission in Sept 1986 and since then it, was my good fortune to have been associated intimately with him for the next 38 years. In his inimitable and distinctive way, Dr. Manmohan Singh has left his indelible imprint on our history.
