People talk about how H-1B visas from India are undercutting American wages today, but there’s an earlier version of this story that doesn’t get spoken about as much, and it likewise involved India. After Britain abolished slavery in the 1830s, Caribbean plantation owners needed a new source of cheap labor, and they needed it quickly. Their solution was to bring in hundreds of thousands of indentured workers from India, shipping them off to places like Trinidad, Guyana, and Jamaica on five-year contracts. Once there, these workers were paid next to nothing and had almost no freedom to leave the plantations. The timing wasn’t a coincidence, either. The newly freed slaves were pushing for fair wages, and plantation owners used this fresh supply of indentured labor to avoid paying them. It kept costs down for the owners, which is exactly what we’re seeing happening throughout America today. The events of the past are repeating.
