It does suck that the animation is cinema crowd consists either of a.) 30 year olds who insist that K-pop Demon Hunters is the greatest movie ever made or b.) this kind of “it’s for adults I know it’s dorky but it’s mature and has Themes” subcultural cringe

@Dotdotdash7 @Ahoworksco anime bridge is more realistic. They definitely based it on a real bridge, but it makes it even sillier how either could take 200 years

@Ahoworksco The animators made a very poor artistic choice there, totally unforced error

@oldgamma These shows are proportionally more popular in North America. The USA loves isekai more than Japan. Slice of Life, hobby, and Iyashikei shows are what Japan watches more than the rest of the world.

Do the Japanese... ever get tired of this...?

@cianchetto4 @CloudMonkeyTWT “One tells you that she's exactly 16,” not necessarily in a context like this. Juxtaposed with the promise it’s clear that the condition is fulfilled and she’s at least 16. Like I said, you wouldn’t blink at it in actual speech.

@ColLaurus @CloudMonkeyTWT Oh so you are 5 I guess, right? That's not casual speech, that's a translation error for fucking sake, they have 2 completely different meanings. One tells you that she's exactly 16, the other tells you she's PAST 16, which is in fact another translation used.

@JemmBrooks @2004_CJS @HakataQueen That’s not a strawman. It’s hyperbole, you mouth-breather. And you’re the one claiming Dragon Maid somehow represents a majority of translations, when anyone with their head screwed on can see that is a rare case.

@ColLaurus @2004_CJS @HakataQueen Well for one the initial argument was that we only ever use the one example (that’s a strawman), & for two you’re appealing to ignroance. This is a problem across MULTIPLE industries (games, anime, light novels, & manga) with tons of documentation that takes hours to sift through

@JemmBrooks @2004_CJS @HakataQueen Sampling only has relevance when it is representative, which a curated group of three out of tens of thousands is the farthest thing from. I don’t disagree bad actors and their bad tls exist, but you have to realize how bad “See three bad tls exist” is as an argument here.

@ColLaurus @2004_CJS @HakataQueen “Yeah, your argument is dumb because you literally didn’t post every translation ever made” There’s a concept in statistics called “sampling”. Also, this conversation has been going on for more than a DECADE. There are entire profiles dedicated to highlighting bad localizations

@CloudMonkeyTWT Not in a context like this when you’re expressing a fulfilled condition. You wouldn’t blink at an understood “already” in actual speech.

I do think that treating anime and manga like sports teams is the worst post covid mutation. You're supposed to use sports for that. They're on all year.
