@DrScottArthurMP @HeriotWattUni Good project for students. This reopening is long overdue and it will likely take another decade at least... One thing HWU students would benefit from is taking the train to Currie with their Lothian Bus monthly pass, where they'd jump on 25 bus (extended from HWU to Currie).

@omarsar0 Is going from Hallucinating to Gaslighting sounds like progress in "intelligence"... Or could it be regression... 🤔 These models are jist unable to doubt.

Finally, a nice paper that evaluates whether o1 can plan. Here is a quick summary of the interesting bits: A domain-independent planner (Fast Downward) can solve all instances of Mystery Blocksworld. LLMs struggle, even on small instances. But Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) like o1-preview are effective but tend to degrade in performance as plan length increases. Now look at the drill down on the performance of the o1-preview and o1-mini models compared to Fast Downward: Accuracy/costs Tradeoffs: The authors claim that "while o1-preview may provide higher accuracy than LLMs, it still fails to provide any correctness guarantees, and it is unclear whether it is at all cost-effective." An interesting comment from the paper on o1's creative justifications: "While our main focus has been on providing a quantitative evaluation of o1’s performance on PlanBench, we have also noticed an o1 idiosyncrasy that is worth commenting on. When the model gives an incorrect answer, it also sometimes provides a creative, but nonsensical, justification for its decision. It is almost as if o1 has gone from hallucinating to gaslighting!" The conclusion in the paper is that while o1 shows a bit of progress on more challenging planning problems, the accuracy gains cannot be considered general or robust (particularly, on longer problems and unsolvable instances).

@JosephineCumbo @AdamGanz At Edinburgh one can start in one Engineer. programme but switch to some other one after 1 yr (with minor condition). I suspect this is true in many other unis. One may also end up discovering a cool discipline not initially considered. Civil Eng. often falls in that category 😉

Tension is running high in the household ahead of A-Level results tomorrow, which determine university places for hundreds of thousands of 18 year-olds in the UK. Meanwhile A-Level son has calmly trotted off to the pub. #A-Level2024

Some v misleading claims about heat pumps in this @Telegraph comment piece by Robert Taylor It fails to grasp the key point about heat pumps - they lead to energy security. Reliance on gas boilers is a major reason we were so badly hit by the gas crisis Here's the rundown... 🧵

Wes Streeting calls you and asks for *tangible* ideas he can implement to help NHS improve performance. But there's no extra money for big spending. What's your one idea? #FantasyNHS I'll start - staff passports across regions to free up pointless mandatory training time.

@EdiDisgraces @overlandertheb1 He's definitely been struggling with whether or not to advertise that he's an academic, "Dr", let alone "Prof.". I actually understand why, but I am sad he doesn't fully own up to his actual profession.

Cedric Grolet is today regarded by international critics as one of the best pâtissier in the world. This is how he prepares the pain perdu, french toast with chantilly cream, vanilla and caramel.
