@escargotpro_ Transplant discourse is always ridiculous but it’s an absurd point because a huge percentage of the people who live in those neighborhoods grew up in the suburbs outside of NYC and their families lived in the city until suburbanization so they already had allegiances to the Mets

Ok but the locals of Queens Brooklyn are largely Mets fans too. All you saying is that the transplants liking the same team as the natives where they moved to. I bet a young professional hipster type identical to these folks in every way who move to 162nd street like the Yankees
Ross Barkan@RossBarkan

Walk the streets of Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Bushwick, Ridgewood, Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights, Prospect Heights. Find a baseball fan who moved to NYC as an adult. Vast majority are Mets fans.

@SamAdlerBell It’s really funny for a Yankees fan to pretend most Mets fan aren’t long suffering descendants of National League New Yorkers. My grandpa hated George Steinbrenner with the passion of a partisan

It used to be the Mets were dismissed as the schlubbly, uncouth, outer borough white-ethnic team, but Yankees fans, ever unsatisfied, bc of their own insecurities, had to figure out some new way to insist on their superiority, so they all started repeating this lazy bs
Ross Barkan@RossBarkan

Baseball season is a reminder of all the laptop, gentrifier class Mets fans who operate in my "sphere" and pollute my air. *However* I will offer an olive branch: David Stearns had a very good offseason. It's a strong roster. Enjoy it.

@escargotpro_ @ImUrHuckleJordy Despite its limitations, Lost at its best also transcended (episodes like the Constant are some of the greatest in TV history) but yeah the politics of the world building in his Watchmen are very silly

@Devine511 @ImUrHuckleJordy I feel like this the one where he wasnt hobbled by the studio (lost) or his terrible understanding of politics (watchmen). I'll watch all 3 tho all fine works but Leftovers TRANSCENDS

@mumble_sauce Go back and forth between thinking I walked people into a firing line at WBAI or that it was a well earned lesson in democratic politics critical for everyone involved

You’re far more likely to die in a car accident than on the subway. Lack of public transit (especially trains!) in huge swaths of the country is one of the major reasons the US has lower life expectancy than comparable nations
CSPAN@cspan

.@SecDuffy: "I'm a Republican, and I love transit…You should be able to have your 14-year-old daughter get on a metro train in New York City at 7 o'clock at night and feel safe. And there's no way in hell I would ever put my daughter on the MTA in New York."

@dlondonwortel Despite the emphasis on the Garrisonians, the political abolitionists who embraced an antislavery Constitutionalism played a far greater role in bringing about emancipation

I never realized until last semester that Frederick Douglas DEFENDED the US constitution as an anti-slavery document - against white abolitionists like Garrison who advocated northern secession from the morally compromised union. What they don't teach you in grad school...

@annierlevin Strong point but an organizing campaign to build a separate union of adjuncts would match if not exceed the effort required to empower them within the existing structures of the PSC while splitting them with many non tenured workers who face similar problems

@Devine511 That potential will never be realized when more than 60% of teaching staff belong to an underclass with almost no union buy-in. Outside of a handful of diehards, rank and file won't organize for a union that doesn't work for them.

@annierlevin I’ve definitely encountered that at some level in the PSC and there’s a chance that adjuncts as well as Grad workers could have made better gains on their own, but I believe the potential of a wall to wall unit to truly shake the foundations of New York politics is worth the cost

@Devine511 Wall-to-wall unions can benefit everyone sometimes. But in PSC tenured/full time are in a union with their part-time, semester-to-semester employees and it creates a huge imbalance. Difficult for adjuncts to have agency. Makes for some weird Weingarten meetings too.

@annierlevin There’s radical potential in the industrial unionism of the PSC. Reactionaries worked hard to make sure that foreman were eventually excluded from the CIO

@annierlevin Our chairs mostly want us to make more money, but would be less willing to break the Taylor Law. The dependency on the state for financing combined with an over supply of labor (in contrast with K-12 educators) plays a huge role

Conservatives freaking out over people grinding another strategic L. Zoomer dont do it & frankly circa 2014 a lot of later millennials started cutting it back. Walking up to a stranger & grinding for 3-9 minutes, if anything, should be a Retvrn Nostalgia thing

@escargotpro_ Organized mass movements make comprises all the time which sometimes leads to better living standards (American labor) or triggers reaction in a way that unleashes a revolutionary transformation (antislavery for example)

He probably needs both idk why these things are presented as not complimentary thats just something some left ppl made up in their heads with arrival of left electeds en mass a few years ago. Theyre not in conflict, its called the inside-outside strategy, its fine its good
Sarah@Sarah_pdx

To succeed and pass his agenda. Zohran will need a mass movement, not backroom deals. DSA needs to give a lead to the administration, not the other way around, helping build up Our Time into a mass campaigning force fighting the whole dem establishment!
