Never gets old… ‘French, why are you wearing your pyjamas?’ ‘Sir?’ ‘You obviously slept like that, so they must be your pyjamas. Go and sort yourself out. And stay away from the hedge you must have crawled through to get here.’ @Kirky_Kirkwood #military

Excellent. Less than 24 hours into my new X account and my first DM is from the heart. I’ve been called a Walt… a f****** Walt no less. In other words, a pretend soldier… ‘stolen valor’ as our American cousins would say. How I missed this. Feels like coming home. #feedback

‘I hear you were hacked, Sergeant Major.’ ‘Yes, Sir.’ ‘And you lost all your followers?’ ‘Yes, Sir.’ ‘Hard to take.’ ‘Most of them were Army officers, Sir, so I really didn’t mind.’ @Kirky_Kirkwood #hacked #horses

What is with this fetish for the robo-dog with a gun on it for room clearance?! You can even see it hit a coffee-table in one of the rooms. It is slow to move around corners, so very vulnerable to enemy fire (it's not armoured either). It's too low to see above any normal furniture. It's an unstable platform, especially for mounting a weapon! They can play a part in certain niche roles, but as a combat platform, there are significantly better options.

There are fair arguments to be made against the bayonet which shouldn't just be chinned off. The Normandy comparison must be conscious of the reliance on 10rnd, bolt-action rifles, not 30rnd assault rifles and back-up pistols. Doing things like building clearing, there are concerns with troops in tight spaces waving stabby things around. Controlling the bayonet point is easier on a long rifle (e.g. No.4) rather than a compact carbine (e.g. SA80). Even in WW2 it is rare to see an SMG with a bayonet, yet no one seemed to consider this inferior. Given the modern trend for carbine-length assault rifles, the soldier doesn't actually get much of a reach advantage with a bayonet anymore. The Australians recently issued a fighting knife (with combatives training) as well as a bayonet. Arguably, the knife and combatives is of much wider utility to troops across the spectrum of conflict than bayonet drills. It also must be acknowledged that some of the most intense fighting in places like Ukraine and Gaza have not resulted many (if any) calls for more bayonet training. It is almost impossible to find footage of Ukrainian troops clearing trenches or buildings with bayonets attached.

Reps and sets build skills. 156 Provost Company, 3 Regt RMP practise clearing buildings at Merville Barracks' Urban Training Facility. The Redcaps provide military policing support to the brigade, a role that demands troops with the skills to adapt to the needs of the mission.

US Army adopts an Offensive hand grenade to give troops options over Defensive frag grenades when clearing buildings and trenches. This is excellent! I've been arguing for the UK to adopt a similar system. It reduces risks to own troops significantly inside structures.

New grenade just dropped💥 The U.S. Army has approved the new M111 Offensive Hand Grenade for release. Developed at Picatinny Arsenal by Capabilities Program Executive Ammunition and Energetics with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM), this is the first new lethal hand grenade to be cleared for service since 1968. Very pleased to have been invited to deliver an Urban Operations package on Ex Bala Warrior. Over 5 days, we revised core urban drills before a troop level attack on a building complex. It is complex & unforgiving the same lessons are being reinforced on real battlefields today.

Urban operations reward discipline, communication & simple drills done well. The soldiers on Ex Bala Warrior demonstrated all 3. Great to see them rapidly build confidence in a challenging environment. (some photos from Ex Rockwork)

Lesson: Complex buildings absorb manpower. Warehouses, apartments and industrial sites take more soldiers and more time than expected. Fighting in Marawi & Bakhmut showed how quickly large structures consume forces. Keep things simple and stay mutually supporting.
