Being a foil to Naruto is his role in the story and it takes priority over Sasuke's goals and growth

Cold take: Sasuke is more complex of a character than Eren and he is up there with Seinen characters in terms of complexity. Eren is so overrated and not even that complex

@EclipseNine @Sasukebix See I just don’t agree with this characterization of Sasuke having a huge ego. I don’t think him taking out Itachi alone is the same as him not recognizing the strength of others. There’s far more thought and nuance to his character than him just having an ego.

@ssstlyish @Sasukebix Like, imagine if Gaara had walked away from that fight with Lee thinking he needed to isolate himself in pursuit of strength after almost losing to someone so vastly inferior. Wouldn't make very much sense, would it? That's the choice Sasuke made.

@ssstlyish @Sasukebix Sorry, I wasn't saying Sasuke's opportunity for that same growth happened in that same tournament, just that he saw Gaara learn the lesson and grow immensely as a result. The opportunity to learn that lesson for Sasuke was his rooftop fight with Naruto, his pride got in the way

@ssstlyish @Sasukebix It's possible, but Sasuke's ego was out of control before they even graduated. 1 on 1 training with Kakashi was exactly what he needed and the most valuable training resource available to him without resurrecting ancient members of his own clan.

@EclipseNine @Sasukebix I think for this part, Kakashi was to blame. Because he put it in Sasuke’s head that he’s special (Orochimaru did the same thing). Kakashi actively took Sasuke away from his teammates to train solo, which could’ve fed into this ego

@ssstlyish @Sasukebix He was in the room when Rock Lee beat this exact lesson into Gaara, but scoffed at his opportunity to do the same.

@ssstlyish @Sasukebix He could have recognized the work his peers put into gaining their strength and how great a role their bonds played in their growth, clear evidence that the village cultivates strength. He stuck to his mission, but only as long as that pursuit served his own ego.
