@FrontRowBrian Its more it makes the promoter actually try. When the product really went to shit was when ESPN guaranteed $ to a certain PPV buy level. UFC stopped trying after that. Only getting worse & worse the more guaranteed $ coming in & the less incentive to actually promote they have.

@AndyHickeyMMA I think people are in for a surprise at just how washed Conor is. I see people talking like he'd kill Chandler. He hasnt fought in years, broke his leg & has been on booze & coke binges. Chandler might be washed, but hes been in the gym. Diaz & Jorge only hopes but I'd favor both

The question is not who will Conor McGregor fight, its who can he actually beat ? Turning 38 with 5 years out the cage & well documented troubles outside of fighting.

@spsorby @DanRafael1 So many people are engaging with what boxing events? DAZN which nobody outside true boxing hardcores has or Paramount+ which has only put on garbage that nobody would watch so far? Netflix is only one drawing eye balls & its Jake Paul circus shit half the time.

@FightGameIsLife @DanRafael1 That so many people are engaging with current boxing events, is largely the point to a lot of this Competition in boxing has always been about trying to succeed the most, not "massacre" anybody Contentment & the lack of need to compete has caused a decade of damage to US boxing

Major difference is that within MMA the UFC is essentially a monopoly. No one promoter in boxing controls remotely enough of the talent to be considered close to a monopoly.
Scal@windowmugger9

@DanRafael1 That's the same justification we hear about UFC's coercive contracts.

@DanRafael1 So why did Saudi bring TKO in? Wasnt like TKO got into boxing on own. The Saudis brought them here. If they are committed to DAZN & want to be "The Global Home of Boxing", how does bringing in a huge competitor like TKO/P+ help achieve that? Lets see the $ on those multi yr deals

The Saudis own part of DAZN, which now has multi-year deals with 4 of the 5 leading traditional promoters in the world -- Top Rank, Golden Boy, Matchroom, Queensberry as well as outfits like Salita and MF Sports. Combined, those companies have most of the best talent & champions.
MayeTheForce@FightGameIsLife

@DanRafael1 Its only a matter of time before its a monopoly. Ali Act, fans buying PPVs & a bunch of networks investing in sport kept fighter pay sky high. Now fans dont buy PPVs, DAZN is only network investing. So you have DAZN trying to take on SELA/TKO/PSKY/Netflix. It will be a massacre.

@FrontRowBrian @Benaskren Thats a $NFLX type fight. No stakes, building towards nothing. Should make it for the first ever UFC Bare Knuckle title. @thenotoriousmma & @gamebredfighter are made for Bare Knuckle. UFC too lacking in violence these days. Add 4 oz Muay Thai as well. Enough Dagestani dry humping

@RapaczBoxing Theres no monopoly in boxing b/c of the Ali Act & the unbelievable pay that was driven by PPV buys & network investment in the sport. Ali Act, PPV buys & network investment all dead except DAZN & nobody watches DAZN & DAZN $ compared to SELA+TKO+Ellisons+Netflix is pocket change.

@troy35584984109 @FrontRowBrian It wasnt about UFC creating $1.1B in value, it was about aligning w/Ari & Trump. Since then the Ellisons had PSKY merger close, TikTok sold to them (& SLake) & watched Netflix get the Mutombo Finger Wag & WBD/CNN end up theirs all due to the Trump relationship aided by Ari.

@FrontRowBrian Its been going down long before that deal. Signing UFC for over $1B a year without PPV is suicide. ESPN had PPV + a monthly fee and they still could not find it profitable to continue. My guess is that we will see a $20 monthly fee or PPV by the end of the year from Ellison.

Where is all this money coming from? $9.5 billion free cash flow 2025. $50-75-100 million for an MMA show is a small line item. There's also some tax implications. Live event rights fees are expensed as incurred — meaning the full cost hits the P&L in the quarter the event airs. You don't have to amortize it. So it's an immediate expense which drives DOWN your tax liability on the net income which for $NFLX is a significant liability. They make a lot of money. Scripted content is different. Netflix capitalizes these costs as "content assets" on the balance sheet, then amortizes them over the projected viewing window. A film might get amortized on an accelerated basis over 1-4 years based on expected viewership patterns (heavier in the first month, then tapering). A series might amortize across seasons. This is why Netflix has billions in content assets on the balance sheet — it's essentially a library that gets written down over time as it's "consumed." $NFLX.

@CraigWrites70 Thats a great question...I just dont think we will ever find out. They are so politically connected & theres so little knowledge of boxing in the Senate that I think its a lock to pass. Even the most hardcore of Democrats like Ilhan Omar gave it her stamp of approval.

@FightGameIsLife Going all in on Benn at this price has created issues for their other athletes (UFC guys have been vocal about the disparity). What's the longest game? What if the senate doesn't pass the bill?

Imagine I'm an idiot. Can someone explain to me why Zuffa are paying Conor Benn $15 million for a one fight deal on a card that's being promoted by Goldstar? boxingscene.com/articles/spenc… What do Zuffa get from this? Apart from the dick measuring contest with MR...

@CraigWrites70 Correct. You are relying on a good working relationship, which Zuffa seems to have w/Keith Connolly (rumors of Berlanga, Hitchins heading there). Strong chance Eddie is going to challenge it in court too, as hes implied in interviews. It is illegal, just comes down to proving it,

@FightGameIsLife Thanks for the detailed response, it's appreciated. OK, so for argument sake suppose there is an arrangement on the quiet for further fights. Unless it's a legal contract Benn is free to do as he pleases after this. And although Ring/Turki are the puppet masters

@CraigWrites70 They structured it this way b/c MR matched on Bam. This screws MR no matter what: match, lose $ on the event b/c it was inflated & hes a FA off to Zuffa after. Dont match, Zuffa gets Benn & then extends him long-term after they already had a wink-wink, nudge-nudge worked out.

@CraigWrites70 TKO is not paying it (they dont pay for any fighters, they get a management fee & equity to run Zuffa), Turki is. Turki also owns The Ring & this is a Ring card. Secondly Benn is not truly on a 1 fight, $15M deal to fight Regis. This was just to get around MRs matching rights.

@RyanAWagMMA Stomps, soccer kicks & knees to a downed opponent. Also bring in 4 oz glove Muay Thai w/Dirty Boxing ground & pound rules. Bring violence back to the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

The UFC should legalize stomps because they have cool applications for guard passing

@JasonAmadi @mookiealexander Theres also the question of how much would they even need to spend? Where is the $ in boxing coming from aside from Saudi? Fans dont buy PPVs anymore & DAZN is only broadcaster investing in their comp. Do you think DAZN is giving some absurd budget thats tough to compete with?

@JasonAmadi @mookiealexander Yes, they are. They are backed by SELA & even if Saudi pulled out, TKO is worth an absurd amount more than their competition combined. You dont think they'd spend for 5ish years to achieve a UFC like biz model in the future? These guys might be boring but they arent short sighted

@heynottheface Only surprise to me is that he had so much leverage in contracts talks w/PFL at the time that the language in the deal wasnt tightened up to prevent PFL for putting him on shelf like they did w/o having to pay. Fortunately for him he made such a windfall boxing it all panned out.

@JasonAmadi @mookiealexander He could've chosen "inevitable" instead of "complete" to be more technically accurate. But the point is the same. The scale is tipped so far in TKO's favor that they dont even have to be good at promoting to achieve it. Which is good for them because they aren't good at promoting

@JasonAmadi @mookiealexander How hard do you think that will be when you are backed by absurd $ advantages & your broadcast deals are w/an HBO+Paramount merged super app, Netflix & Sky in 2 biggest markets while your competition is on DAZN? Most of who are likely being paid peanuts b/c they had no market.

@FrontRowBrian If you were UFC, would you waste a Conor fight on a washed up fighter you cant promote in future? Only got 2 left max before Conor's off to Netflix. Paddy seems like best bet of not fighting a killer + future value for UFC. Islam+Arman there if you really wanted to bury Conor tho
