“‘My name is Irakoze, and I love my family very much.’ So starts ‘That Child is Me’, the story of Claver Irakoze, a child survivor of Rwanda’s 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Claver is far from being the first Rwandan genocide survivor to write his memoirs. He is, however, the first to write them as an illustrated book for children – perhaps because no-one else would previously have thought it possible to find a way of drawing humanity out of that horror in a way which could engage and educate young children instead of simply traumatising them. The result is a stunning achievement. Après ses études secondaires à Rennes, il entre en octobre 1895 au séminaire de philosophie des Pères Blancs à Binson. Le 10 octobre 1897, il prononce ses vœux. Reconnu pour sa bonne volonté, son dynamisme, sa gaieté et son énergie, il prend l’habit à Maison-Carrée. Il est ordonné prêtre à Carthage le 1er février 1902. Envoyé au vicariat du Nyanza méridional, il quitte Marseille en août 1902 et arrive en octobre à Kagungu, sur l’île d’Ukerewe (lac Victoria). Cette mission, alors florissante, comprend de nombreuses écoles accueillant environ 10 000 élèves. Le père Hurel travaille pendant cinq ans à Ukerewe, où il entreprend ses premiers travaux linguistiques, notamment une étude de la langue kikerewe comprenant une esquisse grammaticale, des contes et un vocabulaire. En 1907, il est affecté à Rubya puis à Kagondo. Durant cette période, les missionnaires reçoivent la visite du roi Kahigi, événement marquant pour la reconnaissance des missions dans la région. En septembre 1908, il est envoyé au Rwanda. En juillet 1914, il est nommé à Kogayi comme économe général. En 1917, il devient supérieur de la mission de Nyaruhengeri. En 1919, il retourne en Europe pour suivre en Belgique une formation en médecine tropicale. Parallèlement à ses activités missionnaires, il poursuit ses travaux linguistiques, publiant une grammaire du kinyarwanda ainsi que des dictionnaires kinyarwanda–français et français–kinyarwanda, dont une seconde édition paraît en 1934. Il repart en mission en juillet 1922, en compagnie de Mgr Classe. De retour à Nyaruhengeri, il développe considérablement la mission, qui atteint bientôt 2 000 baptisés. Il est ensuite chargé de la vaste région de Nyaruguru. Le 22 septembre 1927, il est nommé supérieur de la mission de Save, la plus ancienne du vicariat, qui compte alors environ 7 000 baptisés. Il y travaille jusqu’en janvier 1935, avant de rejoindre Kansi. En février 1936, son état de santé impose son rapatriement d’urgence. À son départ, la mission de Kansi compte environ 28 000 chrétiens et celle de Save 25 000. Il meurt le 28 mai 1936 à Angers.
