On March 11, 2026, the House of Lords (Hereditary Peers) Bill, passed at Westminster, effectively ended the right of aristocrats to sit in the British Parliament by birth. In reality, this system had existed in British politics since the Middle Ages. But the first major rupture came with the 1999 House of Lords Act. That reform removed 667 hereditary lords from the system, but due to a political compromise 92 aristocratic seats were temporarily preserved.
