The video circulating on social media of @helenzille and @Anele is a perfect example of South Africa's conundrum, and what it exposes is two-fold. Anele clearly admits that she considers Helen overqualified until she bolsters that every notion in opposition to the status quo (which is clearly failing) is racist. Furthermore, Anele attempts to reinforce that the MSM thinks, feels, and speaks for all of us, when Anele is only echoing what happens within her own echo chamber. And logically, the entire conversation deteriorates from there. Race fatigue is getting real, but who brought it up?

🚨Makwassie landgrab attempt: The poor communication on the relevant legislation leads to this. It creates an environment for land grabs to flourish. Saying ‘it doesn’t happen or won’t happen’ is very different to the lives reality of some. Property rights are under threat in South Africa and political absence by some will force communities to organise and mobilise themselves to deter such assaults. A farmer from Makwassie in North West, Bennie Kanes, was ambushed at his farm gate by a group of people from the Bathlame cooperative on Friday. The group claims they are the rightful owners of the land. According to Kanes, they made racially charged comments like “Your time as white farmers is over.” He believes it was only by grace that he survived the ordeal. Kanes and a friend were leaving the farm when they encountered a closed gate, which was unusual. As Kanes got out to open it, a truck approached from the front and a tractor pulled in behind his vehicle, boxing him in. He now believes this was a planned attack. Seven men attacked him while he was out of his car. At one point, he was on the ground and had to fight his way back to his vehicle. One of the attackers tried to grab a knife from inside the vehicle, but Kanes got there first and threw it away. It was a large knife with a 20 cm blade. He was pulled out of his vehicle again by the group. He managed to stop them from taking his car keys, but they succeeded in removing the ignition key. Kanes said had they retrieved the knife, he likely would not have survived. A video of the incident was later posted on TikTok with a caption stating that “The war has begun at the Makwassie farm. We want our land back. I’m ready for war.” Kanes’s friend, who recently had eye surgery, stayed out of the confrontation and remained calm. Kanes believes this calmness made the attackers suspect they had a firearm, and that this suspicion, along with overheard Tswana conversations among the attackers, de-escalated the situation, leading the group to leave. The police were called and arrived within 10 minutes, managing to defuse the situation. Kanes praised their response. According to Kanes, the group of men are part of a cooperative registered in 2022 that had previously rented the farm from the former owner but allegedly failed to pay rent or electricity. Kanes legally purchased the farm about a year ago after the previous owners had repeatedly warned the cooperative about their non-compliance. The cooperative was also informed that the farm would be sold and had an option to buy, which they did not exercise. After Kanes took ownership, the cooperative claimed ownership of the land and filed a High Court application, which was dismissed with costs. Kanes says he has acted fully within the law.
