The heavy, damp air seeps into the room like syrup, smelling of sweet rot. Stacks of brain vases, holographic data spools, tapes, and disks choke every corner, piled like the hollow husks of long-dead insects. The only light emanates from a cluster of bioluminescent growths, twitching faintly above the desk. The original lighting system has long since succumbed to illness. The entire observatory is unwell. From the vents comes a mournful hiss, the failing breath of a dying circulation system. The bio-forms once tasked with upkeep have gone mad, fled, or simply forgotten how to help the decaying core they were created to sustain. There was a time when the building hummed with data, when students filled the halls with restless purpose, charting brave new vectors into the unknown. That time is long gone. Still, I must admit, their research was invaluable. The floor is layered with symbols, their number growing with each breath. Some are recognizable, others remain opaque. And not all are drawn by my hand. It’s as if something beyond the veil reaches through, correcting the glyphs, completing what I leave unfinished, and patiently helping me. The road to Kala-Kel-Naser is steeped in impossibilities, but the final step arrives with uncanny ease. The Void takes weight first. Then sound. Then temperature. Finally, it drinks the air itself. The faint light remains, a useless little star cloaked by darkness, a glimmer that no longer illuminates. When the ritual ends, the room remains. But I am no longer in the observatory.
