An important delivery for students in Higham, Kent as I visited bringing letters from 🇺🇦 students in Novyi Bilous, Chernihiv. Their words are uplifting, but deeply sobering: ✍️“we have lessons on defending Ukraine”. ✍️“I’m a little tired of the war” ✍️“my school was destroyed” This is #stolenchildhood but a powerful reminder of how resilience endures. Much of the world's attention is understandably on the war in the Gulf. But worth noting there has been no let up in Russian attacks on Ukraine through last night and today. Five people have died and many more injured as civilian infrastructure has been hit. We condemn this.

Absolutely heartbreaking news. My thoughts and prayers today are with the loved ones of PC Bradley Corke and the entire @kent_police family. Convened a high-level defence innovation roundtable in the UK Parliament, bringing together senior parliamentarians with British and Ukrainian partners to accelerate the capabilities needed to counter Russian aggression. Alongside this, I announced new initiatives to document and expose Russian #WarCrimes in Ukraine, to counter Russian disinformation in the UK, and to support the recovery and rehabilitation of Ukraine’s brave veterans. Recently had the privilege to descend into the sacred subterranean monastery of St. Anthony Caves in the Boldyni Hills, Chernihiv. 🇺🇦 Walking through the ancient tunnels among the relics of saints is a powerful experience. Utterly awful - yet another disgusting crime. Having visited the Lyceum with @MeadeJordan and met the students, they are an inspiring and go ahead young people with potentially great futures ahead of them. As, no doubt, Maria had until it was taken from her and her family. RIP.

Last night, Maria - a 15 year old student of the Chernihiv Regional Scientific Lyceum (which I have visited several times since 2023) was killed, as a Russian drone hit her home. A young life and so many dreams and plans stolen in a cowardly strike by Russian terrorists. Today my thoughts and prayers are for her parents who remain in a critical condition and all in Chernihiv who are dealing with the pain of this tragic loss. Rest in peace dear Maria. The Kremlin has the blood of this war crime and thousands of others on their hands. Great to support young people from Gravesham at the Kent Youth Voice Talent Showcase this evening. Held in Margate, this event was entirely organised by young people to showcase the exceptional talent of Kent's youth. Huge congratulations to everyone involved. Especially Libby, who brought everything together through her chairmanship the organising group and Dilpreet who was Vice Chair. The pair from North-Kent were amazing hosts and kept everyone entertained throughout the evening. Events like this, remind us of the importance of giving young people a platform and celebrating how the arts brings our communities across Kent together. A highlight of my recent working visit to the Chernihiv region was visiting the home of 🇺🇦 filmmaker Alexander Dovzhenko 🎬 in Sosnytsia. He helped define Ukrainian cinema at a time when Ukrainian identity was brutally suppressed by Soviet rule. Standing where he was born was a powerful reminder that Ukraine’s culture and history run far deeper than the violence in today’s headlines. Even as Russia continues to inflict terror, Ukrainian culture endures and cannot be erased.
