"Veganuary" being a British invention, it strikes me that due to the strong secondary stress on the "-ary" in American English, it's hard for an American to say the word while preserving the initial long vowel in a way that maintains the semantic link to "vegan".

The voices for yiddish on duolingo keeps pronouncing things wrong and it drives me insane, they pronounce the word ”hoys” as ”hous”, ”froy” as ”frou” and ”vayn” as ”vaan”

@eIi_gamers I don’t know if this answers your question, but the Yiddish words for ‘pineapple’ and ‘apple’ both start with a vowel (ananas, epl), meaning they both require ‘an’ just like ‘apple’ does.

@JewYid Honestly, I loathe words like ווויל and וווין far more. The fact that those are the official spelling, in my mind at least, basically delegitimizes the removal of the silent Alef, as the alternative solution for װו isn’t as thorough. I mean, you’re not seeing anyone write וװֹיל.
