Your first sentence is exactly right. Trump doesn't give a damn about ANYONE. That makes him EXACTLY like you, me, and every soul on earth. Bottom line, barring immediate family, I don't GAF about ANYBODY and neither do you, whether you admit it or not. What I care about is ME and MY living conditions. Thus, since I am forced to tolerate your presence, it is in my best interest to vote for the person, legislation, etc., I believe will make existence most tolerable for everyone. Not to make you better, but to keep you from killing me. Trump is no different. He makes existence tolerable for others in order that his own existence is maintained. That makes him like everybody else. It ain't rocket science.
