Here is a fascinating news for turtle lovers ! Olive Ridley turtle tagged as ‘03233’ has made history by swimming over 3,500 km from Odisha’s Rushikulya beach to Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri coast, crossing two ocean basins, a rare migratory feat. Originally tagged by the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) during the 2021-22 nesting season, the turtle was later found nesting on the west coast, thrilling researchers. This journey confirmed for the first time that Olive Ridleys may nest on both eastern and western coasts of India. This will help us better understand current turtle conservation models. So what are the implications and learnings for TN ! ▪️Start tagging programs to better understand long-distance turtle migration. ▪️Anticipate climate impacts on marine migration and nesting behaviours ▪️Use migration data to update conservation zones and marine biodiversity planning.
