@afneil Ten of £billions saved? Only by ignoring the cost of fossil fuels. Do you think they’re free? & of that 10m, 3m are in work on poverty pay. Do you stop subsidising business & raise wages? & our unemployment benefits & state pension are already lowest in Europe How will they live?

Simples: Release tens of billions from Ed Miliband’s net zero follies for defence capital investment. Release billions more for day-to-day spending by some tough love for the 10m of working age not working and living on benefits. Plus abandon triple lock. Go through current defence spending like a dose of salts to root out current waste and inefficiency (which is mega). Cull legacy programmes for platforms soon to be obsolete.

@afneil Remember to people like Neil on the hard right with a track record of ideological misinformation & propaganda, things like fact checking (ie the facts) & balanced/consistent reporting is considered left wing. That’s how entitled he is.

Sorry. But this word salad can’t rewrite the facts. The defining trend over the past 30 years was the emergence of an overwhelmingly left-leaning broadcast media post Reagan abolishing the fairness doctrine — eventually producing a right-leaning reaction as folks from Fox News onwards realised there was a gap in the market for an antidote. Despite that response, with the emergence of strong right-wing voices, US broadcast media still tilts largely left. But the backlash has gathered pace. CBS could be latest to fall.

The defining trend in U.S. television news over the past 30 years has been polarization and the expansion of conservative media. During that period, Fox News became America’s leading cable news network, while Newsmax and OAN emerged and Sinclair expanded the footprint of centrally produced conservative-leaning content across local television. Many of the same Pew and academic studies you cite describe an increasingly fragmented media environment – with ideologically sorted audiences – that can no longer be accurately characterized by the same old story of left-wing dominance.

@JP_Spencer_ @AdamRamsay By constituency with the Brexit heartlands around The Wash. For years, we had southern Tories claiming there would be trouble up North if we didn’t have a hard Brexit. I guess threatening disorder by pensioners in Kings Lynn doesn’t instil the same fear in Westminster.
