She speaks the truth. It’s difficult. I’ve been pursuing a music career since I was 15 (I turn 38 this year). And while I’ve had some ups, it was mostly downs, and my first major breakthrough (Music Box of Fate) only came within the last year. The way I see it, a creative career is kind of like a never ending game of gambling. You roll the dice over and over until you can’t afford to anymore, and hopefully you’ll have won win within those rolls. You can do things to improve your odds of scoring a winning roll, but at the end of the day it’s still a gamble. The more privilege you have, whether in the form of wealth, status, support network, resources, etc. the more rolls you have, and if you are very lucky you could keep rolling indefinitely until you achieve what you want. Unfortunately, most of us can’t afford to do that. I don’t know where I’m going with this post other than: it’s hard and it’s valid to feel frustrated with any creative career. But please try to keep your head up, please do your best, and never forget why you do what you do. That’s the only thing that will keep you going when the dice are not in your favor 💛

it takes effort to be a good friend this month: > organized brunch for the anniversary of my friend that died 7 years ago, inviting his parents to join in > surprised my sister with a birthday video of 20+ people that I spent weeks making > helped my mom home dye her hair before a big event > cooked an Italian dinner as a part of a weekly rotating dinner series, buying extra tables & chairs to fit more guests it was worth every ounce of effort to see the smiles, appreciation, and love that I got to bring to my community in what ways can you be a better villager this month?
