Afghanistan under the Taliban is already functioning like a Pakistani colony, with Afghans treated like third class Pakistanis under a Pakistani proxy regime. Maybe formal annexation would at least give Pashtuns some rights, and one day Pakistan might wake up as Pashtunistan.

I am saying this as an Afghan: the “Afghanistan is the graveyard of empires” narrative is shallow. Afghanistan has been the graveyard of its own people. Almost every major empire has conquered and ruled it, and in every war far more Afghans have died than foreign invaders.
