I knew my oldest had a writer's heart. She devoured stories (still does). She loved to make up stories of her own but would never right them down She was terrified of getting it "wrong" What did I do? -Poetry: Poetry was the first thing she was willing to do. There are no rules. Misspell it? That's ok. Not a sentence. That's ok too! Poetry opened a door for her to express herself without the judgement -No editing: It's very tempting to correct your child's writing but at the beginning DON'T! There is plenty of time for that. Beginner writers need to just get words on paper, learn the flow, feel the energy. There will be plenty of time to perfect it later -Patience: I didn't push. I held her when she cried because it wasn't perfect (her opinion not mine). I encouraged her with ideas & suggestions but never insisted. Now she's writing things like this (she's 9) "I ripped my way through tangled vines. My feet were scraped and muddy. Then, I heard it again. The chirp of a bird so quiet only very sensitive ears could hear. I kept on going. I was getting deeper and deeper into the heart of the forest where very little sunlight reaches. My feet stepped in something wet. I looked down squinting in the dark. Then, I saw the lake. It stretched across a large piece of land and the chirping seemed to be coming from the other bank. I didn't know what to do because the water was cold to the touch and I was already cold and wet so the river would be hard to swim. But the chirping of the bird gave me courage. It was like the bird knew my troubled and comforted me." On the other side of fear is often where greatness lies♥️
