Took the kids to the theatre and a woman sat two rows behind us spent the entire time talking. She continued for the whole show, unfazed by the number of people craning their necks to glare at her. I kid you not, there were times we couldn’t hear the actors because she was talking over them. Given the price of the tickets, you’d at least expect staff to be around in case there are problems. It isn’t the first time I’ve experience this, and I think people underestimate how much it contributes to falling theatre sales. Cinemas crank up the volume to drown people out, but live theatre doesn’t have that luxury. Artists will decry low ticket sales and blame streaming, short attention spans, etc, but I think they overlook how much a single bad experience like this can put families off returning.
