Employee: What? It’s 8 p.m. right now. I work tonight until 11 p.m., and it’s an hour drive home. That’s only seven hours. I can’t work on that little sleep.
Manager: You’ll manage. We’re short-staffed, and I need you.
Employee: You need to give me 24 hours’ notice. That’s company policy.
Manager: This is an emergency situation. The policy doesn’t apply. I expect you here at 6 a.m. tomorrow.
Employee: Fine. You’ll see.
Following day
Manager: You didn’t show up for your shift this morning. You’re getting a written warning for a no-call, no-show.
Employee: I did notify you. I told you I couldn’t make it.
Manager: You were on the schedule. You’re required to show up.
Employee: You added me to the schedule at 8 p.m. the night before. That’s less than 10 hours’ notice.
Manager: I’m the manager. I make the schedules. If we need coverage, I can adjust schedules as needed.
Employee: Company policy requires 24 hours’ notice for all schedule changes, and you scheduled me to work until 11 p.m. and then start again at 6 a.m.
Manager: That’s your personal issue, not mine.
Employee: Let’s get the HR manager involved.
Manager: Wait, that’s not necessary. We can work this out between us.
Employee: No, I want the HR manager to hear this. HR manager, can you come to the manager’s office, please?
