Of course hardware innovation is good. Improvement is good. What is bad is putting out a new product when we are consistently given proof that the hardware we currently have isn’t being used to its full potential or even close. I want software to improve to where we aren’t releasing new GPUs with software locked features when the current batch hasn’t even been used to its potential yet. The problem I have is the hardware innovation has been so good that it’s allowed for a total collapse of talent and effort on the software development side. Why bother optimizing my code if the GPU has all this extra headroom anyways! Just make the quick and easy slop and push it out cause the hardware will brute force my awful code. That’s the MO right now and it’s disgusting.

@WhoMustNotTweet @christi05430996 @Pirat_Nation While this is true to some extent, it doesn't hold for all cases. Impossible to run RT on a 1080ti? No, probably not. But the lack of acceleration means it'll run so slow that no sane person would actively choose to use it. Do you like the fact that GPUs have video decoders?

Nvidia has a new tech called Neural Texture Compression. It cuts VRAM use a lot. In one demo, textures went from 6.5 GB down to 970 MB. That is about 7 times less memory.

I appreciate you being civil too. Just to reiterate and make clear again I am NOT anti-hardware advancements. I am PRO telling the fucking truth and the truth is that we’ve been paying for remarkable new hardware that never sees anything approaching its full potential due to a software industry that in general focuses on profits and ads rather than smooth, optimized and thoughtful code. My disdain is never with the ones discovering and building this incredible tech. My disdain is at the corporate overlords that encourage cheap dogshit outputs that completely smear the capabilities of the incredible hardware. We need innovation. Some things are truly impossible. We also need to start teaching the youth how to actually code or give in to the AI and let it learn how to code circles around us and make good programs to begin with. It’s not there yet but games like Crimson Desert have been able to push out massive and overall stable patches via the use of AI. We have a workforce problem with software engineers where most are under qualified and/or lazy. From the inside of the industry, this is not simply anecdotal.

@WhoMustNotTweet @Pirat_Nation Well thanks for being civil but Id suggest looking into the difference in math capabilities between a cuda core (shader) and a tensor core (ai core) for example and the RT cores obviously do ray traversal but also do many other things that have to do with BVH.

AI in general is a worthless term in the modern era. Originally, when people said AI they really meant AGI. The popular use of the term AI would be used to refer to sentient systems like Ultron, HAL, AM etc. so the term AI in the modern sense is meaningless anyways. We call a chatbot AI. We can predictive text mechanisms AI. We call an automated voice AI. It just doesn’t mean anything anymore in the way you’re talking about. In the actual technical definition of AI versus AGI, notdeadyet is 100% factually correct. Neural networks are fundamentally AI. That’s like saying the human brain is not part of a human.

@christi05430996 @velosotiago1 @Pirat_Nation If I want instant teleportation then maybe I work on optimizing my code to make it run better? The difference between then NVME and SSD load speeds could easily be negated with an actual attempt at optimization.

@WhoMustNotTweet @velosotiago1 @Pirat_Nation Typically when someone says impossible in the tech space that could also mean the user experience would be bad. why would I want to use a hardware and have the game freeze every time I use the instant teleportation.

As for performance I don’t recall. Certainly it was markedly worse but markedly worse is not “impossible.” @grok help me out here what was the exact performance in testing for these types of experiments? Also correct me if I’m misremembering and stating the GTX1080 when it was the GTX1660

@WhoMustNotTweet @Pirat_Nation How much perf dis that 10 series card in comparison to a RT card tho? Does it support all features? Just because you can get it to work doesn’t mea the experience is good or the hardware wasn’t necessary for a good experience.

@velosotiago1 @christi05430996 @Pirat_Nation Yep. Looks totally impossible right? Exactly like Sony said it would literally be against the laws of reality for the game to run on a standard SSD or HDD. Oh wait no you’ve shared a video of exactly my point. The “impossible” is never actually impossible. It’s laziness.

Do we really believe that too? Remember when ray tracing was only possible on the 20 series cards because of their RT cores? Right up until someone got it running on a 1080 (lower performance of course but it contradicted their pitch of impossible. This is very similar to the “only possible on PS5” nonsense that Sony pushed. They said Ratchet and Clanks load times couldn’t work on anything less than their NVME storage right up until it released on PC and people could run it off of a spinning drive with almost no noticeable differences in load times. I want hardware innovation to continue but we have limited resources. At a certain point there’s a limit to how much memory you can produce and how much energy you can produce. My goal and I think the goal of every tech company should be optimizing every single line of code they’ve got in order to make leaps and bounds in the software space again. Do more with what we have and I think we would be surprised.

@WhoMustNotTweet @Pirat_Nation The problem with that is that this software only works because of the AI hardware and there is a performance hit with it on the weaker the hardware.

@SuguruGriffin @Pirat_Nation Correct! That’s my point is that we need to remember this once the shortage is over. Expect more of your software and don’t fall for marginal hardware uplifts that are offset by lazy programming.

@WhoMustNotTweet @Pirat_Nation This happens because of limitations. Remember that limitations breed innovation. The age of abundance for RAM is over and they have to be creative for next gen hardware.

@zakarum4 @Pirat_Nation You’re missing the point and helping me make my point. My point is we don’t need more powerful hardware for thousands of dollars every couple of years. What we have now can do so much more than we realize with basic optimization and software innovation like this.

@WhoMustNotTweet @Pirat_Nation It doesn't prove anything. You can compress images, we do this for many decades. NVidia just decided that decompression computation costs less than VRAM today.

@dark_ager2 @TakoyakiBoysYT @Pirat_Nation Not sure if you’ve seen the quality of education worldwide lately but most “programmers” come out of activism schools that don’t teach anything about how to actually code. The AI has to do it because the available workforce was trained with coloring books that were prefilled.

@DelusionPosting Oof ya made it to 28 without a ring which tells every guy you date that he’s likely dealing with at least 20 bodies if he dates you. It’s like asking why rich people buy nicer and newer cars. Is the 2000 Honda Civic upset by this?
