@azforeman Old Church Slavonic has crazy numeral declension, so it's been in Russian since the beginning.

Native speakers of modern Russian have a hard time with the declension of numerals, particularly large numerals. Even newscasters sometimes screw it up. The declension system with large numerals is now unstable and in time they may just become non-declinable in ordinary speech. Now, numbers can be a hard thing in language, for a bunch of reasons (high information-content, low predictability). Even the best professional simultaneous interpreters can have a hard time rendering a speech full of large numbers. But I wonder how long numeral declension has been unstable in Russian. It can't have always been the case. Otherwise, it's hard to see how the traditional correct declension of numerals would even have arisen. People at some point must have ben able to use this all this morphology without explicit instruction.

@azforeman Asked my Swiss-German mother about it and she said they are absolutely not two different alphabets. She was born after the switch to Roman fonts though.

@azforeman When foreign loanwords appear in Fraktur texts, they are in regular roman font, not Fraktur. This implies separate alphabets. Spelling rules also differ slightly for Fraktur in ss, ß, tz ligatures. You can't just change the font from roman to Fraktur.
