This is a lie. Because as a musician I always come across people who have no technical skill who love Jazz. Just because it's not enjoyable to YOU doesn't make that the case for everyone else. Even before I started playing music I loved Jazz.

The jazz question is simple: it's very fun to play, it's not very fun to listen to. To enjoy listening to it you must have a combination of technical skill and vivid imagination and be able to imagine yourself playing. It differs in this way from other high skill genres, which can be passively enjoyed at any technical level. You can train passive musical appreciation and get more out of classical music, or other complex styles, but not so for jazz, because jazz is an inside joke

This has been true since the Harlem Renaissance! It went from jazz culture, to Motown, to disco, to hip hop and it’s still going, the never ending pipeline of Black culture to white youth Culture. Palladino called it “Saturday Night Blackness” I used to teach this in my class.
