What happened today at Florida State University is devastating. People lost their lives, families are grieving, and before the facts were even clear, the usual organizations were already flooding social media with their talking points. @giffords_org , Moms Demand, and others all followed the same script, pushing blame and emotional soundbites instead of truth. It’s frustrating to watch, especially for those of us who care about real solutions. The shooter wasn’t some random person who slipped through the cracks. He was the son of a sheriff’s deputy, and he used her duty weapon. This wasn’t about a lack of background checks or private sales. It was a failure of secure storage and personal responsibility from someone who should have known better. But that part gets left out because it doesn’t serve the narrative. These groups depend on the public not understanding how firearms work or what laws are already in place. When people don’t have the full picture, it’s easier to convince them that more restrictions will fix everything. But that approach has never worked, and it never will. We speak out because we actually care about stopping violence. Not just boosting fundraising numbers or generating outrage during election cycles. Real change means asking hard questions and facing uncomfortable truths about the systems that keep failing us. Blaming the tool instead of the person or the institutions involved doesn’t help anyone. Honestly, writing posts like this is exhausting. It feels like shouting into a storm. There’s already so much negativity in the world, and adding more to it isn’t something we enjoy. But ignoring it would mean letting bad faith actors keep controlling the conversation, and that’s not an option for us.
