@DougSaunders Carrefour is magic, we used to drive 150 km each way from Amsterdam just to shop at the nearest one in Belgium.

I suspect a lot of Americans here have visited tourist spots in Europe once and not gone to a typical Carrefour or Rewe or Waitrose. They put even the best US supermarkets to shame in both quality and selection. The better California chains are modelled on them. Not even close

I love America, but I hate to burst your bubble: if you are on Twitter, and you are getting posts about how Europeans visiting for the World Cup are completely in awe of American food and grocery stores— I have to be honest with you and tell you you are being fed complete nonsense by the algorithm. I’ve traveled to almost every European country, and there isn’t a single one which doesn’t have better grocery stores and higher-quality restaurant food than the USA. Just being honest, as a doctor should

I can stand 3 minute hydration breaks just for a world cup in the USA. Ad breaks are a big part of their sports, and it's ok to adapt a little bit to how the hosts do things
But anywhere else there should only be water breaks when it's hot, and for no more than a minute

once you look past the empty seats in a lot of matches and dead atmosphere, the stadiums in America are MAGNIFICENT.

The response to all-things Americana by visiting World Cup fans has been AMAZING, they can't believe how incredible this nation really is. The common refrain heard all over from the WC tourists is that everything they were told about America, the constant negativity, was just nonsense. Now where do you suppose they got that false negative image of America from? Eh?

Soccer is by far the biggest sport in the world with 4 billion people fanbase and revenue stream dwarfing any other sport. And its real capitalism at its best, players taking job from highest bidder wages not control by a shifty cartel, who collude on keeping wages down and blackballing players for random political views. And for the grace of God: Annoyingly shitty teams get relegated to obscurity through the fundamental principle of capitalism: Competition. The hoat rodeos and dog and pony shows are not even close in fierce competitive capitalism.

Can we talk about the soccer sacrilege of squeezing American-style ad breaks into the beautiful game this World Cup under the pretense of “hydration breaks”? I’m watching Norway–Iraq in perfect soccer conditions at Gillette Stadium and, out of nowhere: ad breaks. At least the revenue streams are hydrated.

Irak-Noruega en Boston. Otro estadio casi lleno con dos selecciones que no son ni mucho menos de las grandes. El Mundial 2026 va a generar conversaciones incómodas. Está siendo muchísimo mejor de lo esperado a prácticamente todos los niveles, pero sobretodo a nivel de aficionados en los estadios.

The Hydration Breaks™️ are just another thing for Americans. Their attention spans cannot last a full 45 minutes of football, so they have to commercialise absolutely everything. Notice how they are 3 minutes long? Enough for ad slots.
They have a sponsor for a “countdown to kick off” as well, as if it’s a concert or something.
I remember even the fireworks in Disney World had sponsors for them 😂
