@antmoose the inscription is Archaic Latin or something very close, and predates the arrival of the Volsci... -osio is an archaic genitive ending, known from Indo-European parallels even if unique in surviving Latin.

I'm well out of my comfort zone here, with this archaic Latin/Volscian/Faliscan? inscription with its duplicating syllables (Valesiosio), and I didn't address the possible interpretations of the first letters of the inscription, so please read this post as a distillation.

For #EpigraphyTuesday we're diving into the archaic past to find an #inscription from well outside #Rome that may be primary- source evidence of one of the two consuls who founded the #Roman Republic. The Latin might be Volscian and the #epigraphy is unclear. So buckle up, y'all.

If you're wondering why there was no coverage of Italy's general strike for Gaza in the US it's because they don't want anyone here to recognize how immediately effective those are.

Italian defense minister says Italy is scrambling a naval ship to defend the humanitarian flotilla attacked over night by drones in the Mediterranean, and Israel has been informed. Statement: "Regarding the attack suffered in recent hours by the Sumud Flotilla vessels, which also include Italian citizens, carried out using drones by currently unidentified perpetrators, we can only express the strongest condemnation. In a democracy, even demonstrations and protests must be protected when they are conducted in compliance with international law and without resorting to violence. “To ensure assistance to the Italian citizens on the ‘Flotilla,’ this morning at 3:50 a.m., despite being in Estonia, after a meeting with the Chief of Defence Staff and a quick and summary assessment of the incident, I spoke with the Prime Minister and authorized the immediate intervention of the Italian Navy's multi-purpose frigate Fasan, which was sailing north of Crete as part of Operation Mare Sicuro. The frigate is already en route to the area for possible rescue operations. “The Israeli Military Attaché in Italy, our Ambassador and the Military Attaché in Tel Aviv, and the Crisis Unit of the Farnesina have been informed of this decision.”

proceedings of the last ASMOSIA conference (2022) have just been published; the contribution (a couple years out of date, better than nothing) of myself and F Marra, on approaches to archaeometric proveniencing of tuff used in ancient Rome, is here: works.hcommons.org/records/d52z8-…

@theo_nash that type of monument is well enough attested in the region, often in non-classical style

Roman sculpture people — does anything about this look remotely plausible?

archaeo hive-mind: does anyone know of good archaeological contexts from the ancient Mediterranean in which coins were found within the structure of a multi-part monument? (e.g., between an inscription and its base, or between multiple blocks of an altar)

@diffendale I think what you are looking for can be found at the Artemision at Ephesus for example - here's Meadow's chart from his review of White Gold, persee.fr/doc/numi_0484-…. And there's also the 100+ coins found under a base in the cella of the temple of Artemis at Sardis iirc.

Sad news. Just heard that Penelope Mountjoy, a titan in the field of Mycenaean studies (specifically pottery), passed away peacefully in her sleep yesterday evening. Her work endures.

@chapps this is a weird one; wish it had some provenance, as without it I have some doubts

Handle of an Etruscan bronze mirror, depicting a winged Lasa, a protective deity (like a later Roman Lares) associated with Tuan, the Etruscan goddess of love. Perhaps a wedding present for a young bride, and later placed in her tomb. 1/ 3rd c. BCE. #ARTIC 📸 me

@Sarah404BC Don't fear, I have made it to Napoli port ready to board ferry. I will have to come stay in Naples for a week though and just try to go into the museum every day until epigraphic and graecia magna galleries are open. Mosaics were also closed this afternoon.

Got into the MANN for what was supposed to be a quick visit. Everything has moved, new things are open. This could be a problem. @Sarah404BC I could be here for days.

@chapps yeah, everything from just after the little hallway with the bronzes from Bisenzio is from Faliscan territory, down to the end of the architectural terracottas, before you get into the tombs from Veii on the ground floor. Celle is one of the sanctuaries of the city of Falerii

@diffendale Hahahaha! Well, I do mention that on the Flickr page. The museum is awful at differentiating between Faliscans and Etruscans. It’s a Faliscan sanctuary, contrary to what the museum says, I think.

This large #Etruscan terracotta figure of Juno Curitis was probably a cult statue, on display within the temple of the goddess' sanctuary at Celle. Presented as a patrician matron, with a gorgeously patterned peplum and bejeweled diadem. ca. 380 BCE. 📸 me

What do we know about lamp production in Greece/Rome? Would each be hand made or would there be a mold? Any suggestions on resources would be great, especially since it seems like L'Annee is down for me.
