Do you recognize the portrait of "Augustus"? With no concept of cultural heritage, the wealthy and powerful 19th-century European rulers added the new heads to the army of headless marble statues. Like here, on the colossal statue of emperor Augustus, now in Archeological Museum of Naples

Una pregunta los de Hª Antigua sección romana: ¿Había una profesión concreta para los que pintaban las esculturas o en el mismo taller de escultura se hacía todo?

@JasonColavito Yes, it’s obvious, but not to the ‘alt-history’ mouth breathers,

As you can see, if you take a picture of the Sphinx temple, it does indeed appear "under" the Sphinx in the composition of the resulting photo.

@Daily_MailUS JFC, it clearly means the temple at a lower elevation from the Sphinx … literally below it on the Giza plateau.

@CatImperator @amayor I threw my two cents in. People don’t understand the various types of reconstructions, and why they’re made. The Brinkmanns only create what can scientifically be detected, and never say that a reconstruction is exactly as it looked in antiquity. It’s not a good essay.

@amayor I think that @chapps would have something to chime. He is an expert in the field. But yeah, I am surprised how long those "gaudy color statues" have been promoted When in fact, they looked more like this Spanish reconstruction of Augustus

@HistContent The vast majority of the smaller items found at Thonis-Heracleion were broken, as shown in the video you posted. Are you attempting to build an ‘alt-history’ story here?

Artifacts pulled from the sunken depths of Thonis-Heracleion in Egypt challenge what we accept about ancient Mediterranean history. This massive port city built in the 12th century BC holds Greek ceramics that somehow survived massive tsunamis and deep soil liquefaction without a single crack..

@DrNeilStone The fact you think it happened organically…how cute. This…same as Obama’s Ebola stunt, is a staged event. The purpose is to drive the agenda using fear. …if course you already knew that.

The Hantavirus outbreak is a classic example of the absurdly improbable sequence of events that typifies these events Someone goes to rural Argentina, gets an incredibly rare but deadly virus from a rodent, and then promptly gets on a CRUISE SHIP

@amayor Hate to say it, but I really don’t like that essay. I tried discussing it with the author - there are SO many mistakes and misunderstandings (for instance, that Augustus just shows the detectable pigments - underpainting - and is not meant to be a reconstruction).

@antmoose @ensi_gudea Well you should have been specific! And N's bust could have been a teaching piece, to show techniques to apprentices. But we'll never know ...
