Thanksgiving (and this time of year) is when I often take a moment to reflect on things a bit. Probably due to the clear marking of the end of the year. As I think about #gamedev today and general online discourse, I think how easy it is to be a cynic and to be negative about how hard it is to succeed as a developer. But the truth is, having been there through the 80s, 90s, 00s, etc...there has never been a better or easier time to be a game developer. The level of information and tools makes everyone a potential game designing superhero today. Everyone. It's true there is more competition than ever and it's harder to be seen but it's also true that there are also orders of magnitude more customers and gamers and more avenues to get your games to players. Making games is hard!(tm). But I assure you, it always has been. I see success story after success story and even removing all the mega-hit unicorns, there are near endless indies that crack 1000-2000 reviews on Steam which is very healthy and self-sustaining for long term development. It does require that you make something slightly above the line and special but it always did. Even in the early 80s you could not just shove a big license into a box and have it sell (eg: E.T. on the 2600 - and many more). Gamers have *always* been discriminating, no matter the era. Respect your player's time and give them something that rewards their interest. Take care before blaming The System, The Stores, The Competition or The Engine. Your game trumps every one of those every single time. Your game and what you create is Job #1. YOU are the master of your own universe - not The System. So stay positive, maybe cutback on online distractions and social media and just focus on making your thing as great as it can be. There's really no reason to be anything other than optimistic about game development today. Go make your thing. Day by day. Step by step. Asset by asset. Gamers are waiting for it. It's up to you. #indiegame #IndieGameDev
