@glenngabe I can confirm this on my side too. I have a few tech sites and a few online tools sites. All surged during the November update and reversed in the December update.

With the November core update, verywellhealth.com surged like mad, but some of that is reversing with the December core update (big-time). Whatever systems are being updated with the Dec core update must be very powerful to counterbalance what happened in November. Will be interesting to see how it fares throughout the res of the update. Also, @chippy included VWH in his post about the December core update landing... sistrix.com/blog/google-co…

We know many people, including those in the research community, value seeing previous versions of webpages when available. That’s why beginning today, we're adding links to the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine to our "About this result" panel, to give people quick context and make this helpful information easily accessible through Search. To access archive links, click on the three dots next to a search result. In the window that appears, click on the "More about this page" button, then look for the "See previous versions on Internet Archive's Wayback Machine" link. It will take a day or so for this to fully roll out and be available for those searching in 40 different languages. Learn more about how "About this result" works and other information it offers here: support.google.com/websearch/answ…

@aleyda A more optimistic take is that they put the product out there, got a ton of feedback and now will fix it fast. This is the Gemini images debacle 2.0.

Google had a year to test the AI overviews results and here we are, major media now covering their bad quality. It seems that most of their concerns were about their monetization viability and impact rather than the quality. Now major publications are covering it. And no, this is not the equivalent of ranking lower quality results. It’s worse. One thing is when you rank lower quality content in some scenarios, which is already bad but at least users can easily see the source of the information. Another is that Google directly showcases a summary with bad / wrong information packaging it in a way that makes it hard to understand where is coming from in the first place. How can users trust these answers? Being a reliable source of information is the base of a search platform, and from what we’re seeing here, it seems that they’ve forgotten about what makes them the top search choice for the audience. Let’s hope this makes them reconsider their approach so far.

Today's newsletter is the story of how Prabhakar Raghavan, Google's former head of ads - led a coup so that he could run Google Search, and how an email chain from 2019 began a cascade of events that would lead to him running it into the ground. wheresyoured.at/the-men-who-ki…
