Who is Khan? Major-General Feroz Khan, was the head of SAPS Counter and Security Intelligence until last year when he was moved to another division within CI. He remains at the centre of growing controversy and serious allegations linked to internal Crime Intelligence battles and political interference claims. Khan’s name has repeatedly surfaced in connection with several high-profile matters over the past few years, placing him under intense scrutiny. One of the most serious allegations relates to a 2021 R700-million cocaine bust in Johannesburg. At the time, claims emerged that Khan allegedly interfered in the investigation to protect certain police officers accused of attempting to steal part of the seized narcotics. The allegations led to internal investigations and deep divisions within SAPS Crime Intelligence structures. Despite the controversy, a disciplinary hearing chaired in 2025 by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi cleared Khan of wrongdoing, with findings reportedly stating that there was insufficient evidence against him. However, the decision did little to silence criticism and suspicion surrounding his role in several sensitive investigations. In March 2026, advocacy group Public Interest SA publicly called for Khan’s immediate suspension, accusing him of intimidation, abuse of authority and alleged links to criminal networks. The organisation argued that the seriousness of the allegations required urgent intervention to protect the integrity of SAPS and Crime Intelligence operations. Further controversy erupted after Lieutenant-General Mkhwanazi alleged that former Police Minister Bheki Cele had pressured him during 2021 to protect Khan while investigations connected to the cocaine seizure were unfolding. Those claims added to long-standing concerns about political interference in policing and intelligence matters in South Africa. Khan’s name has also emerged during proceedings linked to the Madlanga Commission as well as the parliamentary ad hoc committee probing issues within Crime Intelligence and the alleged misuse of secret service funds. However, despite his name being mentioned during discussions, Khan was not called to appear before the ad hoc committee. At this stage, it also remains unclear whether the Madlanga Commission has formally issued a summons compelling Khan to testify before the commission. Khan has consistently denied any wrongdoing. He maintains that he is being targeted because of investigations he conducted into the alleged abuse and misuse of secret service funds within SAPS intelligence structures. The ongoing allegations and counter-allegations have once again exposed deep divisions within South Africa’s policing and intelligence environment, raising broader concerns about accountability, political influence, corruption and internal power struggles within SAPS. @pule_jones @eNCA

JUST IN: The PKTT, backed by other law enforcement units, are currently executing a search and seizure warrant at a top-market apartment block in Houghton, Johannesburg. It is understood that Major-General Firoz Khan from Crime Intelligence resides in the building. @pule_jones @eNCA
