Check out our new paper on Nature showing that synonymous mutations are mostly strongly non-neutral. nature.com/articles/s4158… with the accompanied News and views (nature.com/articles/d4158…). The first author is Xukang Shen, and corresponding author is my Ph.D. advisor George Zhang.

@JoannaMasel Thank you for the suggestion. I will read that paper very carefully. From figure 1 (discussion), I think the fraction of events being nonadaptive will be higher for yeast.

@lichuan_Bio I'm surprised you don't cite academic.oup.com/mbe/article/33…. I found their evidence very persuasive of adaptive readthrough in Pancrustacea (including Drosophila) but not elsewhere (including yeast).

My Ph.D. work with Dr. George Zhang about readthrough being nonadaptive in general is finally online. ^_^ #PLOSGenetics: Stop-codon read-through arises largely from molecular errors and is generally nonadaptive dx.plos.org/10.1371/journa…
